Lady Knights battle in loss to Seneca

Eisenhower’s Leah Peterson (16) fires a shot on net during a match against Seneca at Eisenhower High School, Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018. Peterson scored on the play, but the Bobcats defeated the Knights, 6-2.

For 30 minutes, the Eisenhower girls soccer team played evenly with Region 3 powerhouse Seneca.

One mistake planted a seed of doubt that grew into a 6-2 Bobcats victory at Eisenhower High School Thursday.

“We were holding them well,” Eisenhower coach Diana Elmquist said. “We were playing good defense and had some keeper saves.

The Bobcats got on the board at 30:48 thanks to an Eisenhower own goal. Seneca fired a shot on net, keeper Faith Johnson deflected the shot, but the rebound went off a Knight defender and into the net for a 1-0 Seneca lead.

Madison Hoover picked up the second tally with a shot from center just outside the box at 37:44.

Eisenhower keeper Faith Johnson makes a save on Thursday against Seneca.

With just under 8 seconds to go in the half, the Bobcats added thier third tally on a close call. Johnson stopped a shot from the right side and dove to push the ball out as the rebound headed back toward the goal line. The official blew the whistle and indicated the ball had crossed the line and Seneca took a 3-0 lead into the half.

“We were down a little bit and (the call) definitely didn’t help,” Elmquist said.

Madison Fletcher got her first of the game eight minutes into the second half. Seneca got the ball into the offensive zone. It looked like the Knights were going to be able to clear the zone, but Fletcher regained possession and fired a high shot to the far side that just went over Johnson’s reach and in. Addy D’Antonio scored three minutes later when she grabbed the ball off a goalie kick. She made a move to the center and tucked the shot in on the short side.

Caroline Smelko got the Knights on the board at 54:53 when the Bobcats were called on a hand ball. Smelko took the indirect free kick and put it past the keeper and in from the left side.

Fletcher answered with her second just four minutes later. She took possession near midfield, sashayed into the box and put a high shot just under the crossbar.

Leah Peterson closed out the scoring at 74:27. Smelko took the ball on a run down the right side almost to the corner. She centered a pass to Peterson who put a high shot over the keeper and in.

Despite the lopsided score, Elmquist knows her team has the ability to take down quality opponents like the Bobcats.

“We have all the potential to beat them,” she said. “We just need to clean up some things.”
