Knights throttle Saegertown for first victory of season

Eisenhower’s Garrett Head (2) strolls into the end zone late in the first quarter of a game against Saegertown at Canon Memorial Stadium, Friday, Sept. 14, 2018. Head added a receiving touchdown later in the game and the Knights rolled past the Panthers, 52-6.
SAEGERTOWN, Pa. – After narrowly missing picking up its first win of the season the last two weeks, Eisenhower put Saegertown away emphatically Friday.
Ethan Chambers scored three times and Garrett Head twice to lead the Knights to a 52-6 win over the Panthers at Canon Memorial Stadium.
“We did what we were supposed to do,” Eisenhower coach Jim Penley said. “We made some explosive plays and played solid defense.”
The Knights (1-3, 1-1 Region 2) had some trouble getting the offense going early, their first two drives going for a combined 20 yards, but started to put things together late in the first quarter.
Facing a 3rd-and-1 from midfield, Chambers broke loose down the left sideline for 40 yards to set up a 1st-and-goal at the 10. Head scored from four yards out two plays later to put the Knights up 7-0.

Eisenhower sophomore quarterback Owen Trumbull had another strong game in a big win over Saegertown.
A holding penalty on the first play of the next possession had Eisenhower looking at a 1st-and-23 from their own 21. Owen Trumbull dropped back and found Chambers on a screen pass. Chambers shook loose a defender, juked another and raced down the sideline for a 79-yard touchdown to give the Knights a 14-0 advantage less than a minute into the second quarter.
“That play was huge,” Penley said. “It helps get people to believe they can make plays.”
A Chambers 25-yard second down run on the next possession put Eisenhower in Panthers territory and Nate Holt sprinted through the defense for a 28-yard touchdown just two plays later to make it a three score game.
Following a three-and-out and a punt that netted only 12 yards, the Knights were back in business late in the half. Trumbull lobbed a pass to Head, who made a tough catch between two defenders and crossed the goalline to give Eisenhower a 27-0 lead at the half.
Chambers capped a 10-play, 58-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run on Eisenhower’s first possession of the second half to make it 34-0.

Ethan Chambers and Eisenhower travel to Northwestern in search of their second win.
“Ethan’s a hard-nosed kid, and a big part of what we can do offensively,” Penley said.
Saegertown (0-4, 0-2) finally picked up its first first down of the game on the ensuing possession, and drove into Eisenhower territory, but Zane Alexander picked off Jaden Wilkins’ third down pass attempt to end the threat.
Eisenhower again put together a sustained drive, going 70 yards on 12 plays. It appeared the Panthers were going to hold the Knights out of the end zone on the drive with Eisenhower looking at a 4th-and-21 from the Saegertown 25. But Chambers made another explosive play, breaking through the defense and streaking down the left sideline for a 25-yard touchdown run.
Holt’s 50-yard interception return on the next play put the Knights right back in Panthers territory and Dillon Benson scored three plays later.
Jared Beers’ interception set the Knights up at Saegertown’s 30 and Cael Black capped the 5-play drive with a 7-yard touchdown run to put Eisenhower up 52-0 with 5:17 to go.
“We were able to get some guys some rest and get a lot of players involved with the ball,” Penley said.
Saegertown answered with its best offensive possession of the night. The Panthers went 52 yards in eight plays and Ezra Mattocks spoiled the shutout with a 5-yard touchdown run with less than a minute to play.
Chambers finished with 282 total yards (179 rushing, 103 receiving) and three touchdowns. As a team, the Knights outgained the Panthers 414-103.
Eisenhower will look to carry this momentum into next week when the Knights travel to Rogers Field to take on Northwestern.
“This gives us confidence and shows we have the ability to be very, very good,” Penley said. “We just need to be consistent.”
