Eagles topple Braves

Youngsville’s Andrea Sveda (20) receives a serve during a match against Warren County Christian School at Youngsville High School, Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018. Sveda had 10 kills and five blocks to help the Eagles to a 3-1 win over the Lions.

IROQUOIS, Pa. – In 2016 and 2017, Youngsville volleyball won a combined three games.

All three were against Warren County opponents (Eisenhower twice and Tidioute).

Tuesday night at Iroquois, the Eagles picked up a 3-1 win over the Braves for their fourth win . . . of 2018. It was Youngsville’s second straight win, and second this year against a team outside the county.

“The girls showed positive teamwork in their fight to win,” Youngsville coach Barb Lutton said.

The Eagles (4-5 overall, 1-3 Region 3) battled the Braves (0-10, 0-4) through the first two sets. Youngsville won the first in extra points, 26-24, then dropped the second 21-25.

“They weren’t playing to their ability,” Lutton said. “They played down rather than playing up.”

The Eagles certainly played up in the third as they rolled to a 25-9 win.

“They realized they needed to get it moving and got serious during the third game,” Lutton said.

The teams were closer to even again in the fourth, but the Eagles put the match away with a 25-22 win.

“Service errors disrupted the momentum,” Lutton said. “There were also a lot of mental errors, along with the service errors.”

Andrea Sveda had seven kills and four blocks for the Eagles.

“She’s becoming a really well-rounded player,” Lutton said. “She makes a major difference for us in the front row.”

Megan Foley had 17 service points with four aces and three blocks. Jena Wilson had 11 service points, two aces and nine assists, while Maddie Uplinger had 10 service points, five aces and three kills and Amber Evans had 10 service points with five aces. Kamryn Weissinger (seven kills) and Alyssa Molek (11 digs) also played well for the Eagles.

Youngsville will look to make it three straight wins when the Eagles host Tidioute tonight.

Iroquois won the junior varsity match 26-24, 11-25 and 15-8.

Mallory Sherrard had 12 service points with five aces, two blocks and a kill. Weissinger had 10 service points, four aces, five kills and four digs and Victoria Bull added 10 digs and two kills for the Eagles.

“The girls played flat,” Youngsville assistant coach Vicky Straub said. “They just weren’t able to fight back in the third.”
