The Erie bats went to work early in support of Hussey, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

With one out, McDowell’s Matt Shepard tripled to right field and was brought in on Casey Smith’s (Harbor Creek) sacrifice fly. The Steelies then rallied with two outs. Fairview’s Mason Bender got things started with a single, followed by a walk to Cody Smith (Harbor Creek) and Warren’s Ryan Rafalski reaching via hit-by-pitch.

Harbor Creek’s Cam Williamson delivered the big blow, a bases clearing double that brought in Bender, Smith and Rafalski, giving Hussey all the run support he needed.

The Chiefs struck for an unearned run in the second, but Erie responded, scoring twice in the third.

Again it was Williamson coming up with a big hit, an RBI triple with two outs that brought in Rafalski, who had singled. Rocco Frisco (Brownsville) brought in Williamson with an RBI single.

That made the score 6-1, and the Steelies tacked on one more in the fourth on Casey Smith’s RBI single that brought in Shepard.

Motor City scored a pair of runs in the seventh, but Aidan Kelly was able to escape further damage to cement the Steelies’ victory.

Williamson finished with four RBI, while Rafalski and Shepard each scored a pair of runs. Warren’s Micah Passmore was 1-for-3 and Mitch Grosch 0-for-4. Both played stellar defense the entire weekend.

Semifinals

Steelheads 10, Oil City Bandits 0 (Oceanside, NY), 4 innings

Shepard fired a 4-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts and Bender was 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored to help the Steelheads to a 10-0 win over their counterparts from Long Island.

Casey Smith’s RBI single in the first inning brought in Hussey and Bender followed with a 2-run bomb to right field to make it 3-0 early.

That proved to be more than enough run support for Shepard, who struck out eight and walked just two against the Oilers, who are based 30 miles east of midtown Manhattan.

Erie was far from done with the bats, however, as Hussey and Smith scored on an error in the third inning to make it 5-0, and Rafalski’s RBI single made it 6-0. McDowell’s Jared Bielanin capped the inning with a 2-run single to bring in Rafalski and Cody Smith.

After a scoreless top of the fourth, Bender belted an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning, followed by an RBI single from Rafalski to invoke the 10-run rule to end the game.

Rafalski finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored and Casey Smith 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Steelheads 20, South Hills Devil Dogs 6, 4 1/2 innings

Everyone had a hand in the Steelies highest scoring game of the season, as they plated a whopping 13 runs in the first inning en route to the win.

Their opponents, based out of the Pittsburgh suburb of Bethel Park, never stood a chance.

The inning included three straight RBI singles from Casey Smith, Bender and Raflaski, a 2-run single off the bat of Shepard, another RBI single from Smith and bases loaded walks to Cody Smith and Rafalski. Aidan Kelly capped the inning off with an RBI single that brought in Rafalski.

Rafalski, who had a monster weekend offensively, led the charge with five RBIs, while Bender and Cody Smith each drove in three and Shepard and Casey Smith two each. Casey Smith scored four runs, while Grosch, Shepard and Bender scored three times apiece. Passmore also walked and scored a run.

Rafalski was 12-for-15 on the weekend with 11 RBI and seven runs scored and was retired just three times in six games.
