Weather puts District 10 playoffs on hold

Warren pitcher Adam Irwin fires a ball to the plate during the first inning of a game against Harbor Creek at Legion Field, Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Irwin threw a complete game, allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out six in a 10-1 Dragon victory.

The Warren Area High School baseball and softball teams had to wait a little longer than usual to start their respective regular seasons because of inclement weather.

As it turns, the playoffs are no different.

Rain and thunderstorms across the region put a halt to a large portion of the District 10 postseason schedule, on Tuesday with both Warren teams affected.

The good news is that is the only change.

The softball team will still play at Allegheny College at noon today against Conneaut in the Class 4A quarterfinals, while the baseball teams takes on Meadville at 1 p.m. at Slippery Rock University’s Jack Critchfield Park, also in the 4A quarterfinals.

Both those sites, as well as the Hermitage Athletic Complex, were the three main sites District is using for its quarterfinal action in all classifications, and they will all maintain their normal schedule that was originally slated for Tuesday.

Warren softball is the first of a tripleheader at Allegheny, which will be followed by Saegertown and Maplewood (2 p.m.) in a 2A quarterfinal game and Northwestern vs. Sharon at 4 p.m. in a 3A quarterfinal contest.

Warren baseball is also the first of three at Slippery Rock. They will be followed two of the three other 4A quarterfinals – Hickory vs. Slippery Rock at 3:30 p.m. and Fort LeBoeuf vs. Grove City at 6 p.m.

Two baseball games were played as scheduled on Tuesday, both at UPMC Park. Harbor Creek defeated Sharon in their 4A quarterfinal game, while McDowell had no trouble with Erie High in their 6A title game.

The rest of the schedule remains unchanged, with all softball semifinal games scheduled for Thursday, meaning that all teams advancing will play on back-to-back days.

Baseball will also play its semifinal games as scheduled on Friday.

All sites and times for those games are to be determined.
