Allison (Atwood) Madigan

WAHS grad inducted into Grove City Athletic HOF

Allison (Atwood) Madigan, a Warren Area High School graduate, excelled in both tennis and softball at Grove City College from 2000 to 2004, where she was recently inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 10, 2018.

In tennis, she capped her career by earning the conference’s Player of the Year award in both 2002 and 2003. Overall, she won conference titles in both singles and doubles competition in each of her four seasons.

She compiled a 47-9 career singles record and a 42-12 doubles record. She went 36-0 in conference matches while helping lead Grove City to four straight league titles under head coach Cathy Jacobs.

As a pitcher and second baesman for the Grove City softball team, Atwood earned All-PAC recognition in each of her four seasons, including First Team honors in 2001, 2003 and 2004.

She capped her career by hitting .473 in 2004 while also leading the team in hits, total bases and runs batted in. Atwood also earned the PAC’s Pitcher of the Year award in 2004 after posting a 1.08 earned run average.

In her junior season, Atwood struck out a program-record 112 batters. She owns Grove City’s single-season and career records for strikeouts per seven innings. Her .367 career batting average ranks fourth all-time at Grove City.

In 2015, the conference named Atwood to its 60th Anniversary Team in both women’s tennis and softball.

Atwood earned CoSIDA Academic All-District in both sports during her career. She also earned Dean’s List and PAC Academic Honor Roll.

She graduated from Grove City in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. In 2010, she completed her doctorate in cancer biology from Vanderbilt.

Sandberg shines for Clarion at Cottrell Invite

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Clarion men’s golf team finished the Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invite, hosted by West Chester University, in 8th place.

The Golden Eagles, placing 8th out of 10 competing teams, finished the two-day tournament with a team score of 630. California (Pa.) wins the tournament with a team score of 598, just four strokes ahead of Millersville University.

Clarion shot a team score of 307 on Tuesday, representing a 16 stroke improvement from Monday’s round of 323.

Nathan Sandberg, a Warren Area High School graduate, followed up Monday’s round of 73 by carding a 76 on Tuesday to finish tied for 8th place overall with a two-day score of 149. Austin Smith from California was the top individual golfer, posting back to back rounds of 71 to finish two over par for the tournament.

Mitch Faulkner shot an impressive round of 75 on Tuesday, representing a nine-stroke improvement from Monday to finish tied for 28th.

Nick Giambrone, also a WAHS grad, improved on Tuesday, posting a round of 79 to finish tied for 35th. Tanner Houser cut seven strokes on Tuesday, posting a 77 to also finish tied for 35th with Giambrone.

Logan Reed rounded out the Clarion golfers with a two-day total of 175.

Fantaskey delivers walk-off for ‘Hurst

ERIE, Pa. – Collin Fantaskey, a Warren Area High school graduate, put the finishing touches on a 6-run comeback for Mercyhurst as the senior’s walkoff RBI single gave the Lakers a 9-8 win over Notre Dame College at Mercyhurst Baseball field.

The Lakers (20-5) have now won their last four non-conference games and 14 of their last 16 overall, while Notre Dame drops to 9-22 on the season.

With the bases loaded and one out, late-game substitution Kenny Robinson singled through the right side of the infield to bring home one run and knot the game at eight. Robinson’s hit was followed by Fantaskey’s game-winning base knock through the left side to cap a three-hit game for the senior outfielder.

Mercyhurst returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action this weekend with two doubleheaders against Slippery Rock April 13-14. The Lakers travel to Slippery Rock Friday before hosting the Rockets Saturday.
