Lions top Erie First; WCCS girls drop close one

Warren County Christian School hosted Erie First Christian for a double header Monday and the Lions came away with a split.

The Lady Lions fell 36-32 while the boys rolled to a 57-36 win.

GIRLS: ERIE FIRST 36, WCCS 32

Erie First jumped out to a 12-4 first quarter lead and WCCS was never able to get back even. The Lions pulled to within a point at times in the second half, but poor shooting from the free throw line doomed them.

“We never were able to take the lead,” WCCS coach Tom Jones said. “Our foul shooting failed us. We were 4-17 from the line. We had plenty of opportunities to make the game even, and in the last quarter we were 2-8 from the line.”

Jones said the girls gave “great effort” and was pleased with how competitive the game was since Erie First had defeated the Lions by 15 earlier in the season.

“The girls are doing a lot better,” he said. “We look forward to playing them again in the league tournament.”

Kiara Baker led the Lions with 11 points, while MaKenna Phelps had 10 and Rachel Brenner added nine in the loss.

BOYS: WCCS 57, ERIE FIRST 36

The boys turned a four-point first quarter advantage into a 14-point halftime lead and never looked back in the rout.

Jared Younger had another big game, scoring 25 points and grabbing nine rebounds.

“We had a strong effort from Jared Younger,” Jones said. “A lot of his points came on offensive rebounds. He worked hard on the boards.”

Ethan Kerr had 14 points and nine rebounds and Steven Brenner added 10 points in the win.

“Kerr led us in defensive rebounds,” Jones said. “It was really nice to see Steven Brenner worked really hard to get some hustle points for us. He got some rebounds and converted them to points.”

The boys travel to Oil City today to take on Faith Christian Academy.
