Kiara Baker scored 13 points, Rachel Brenner 12 and WCCS used a suffocating defense to earn a 44-30 victory.

“Big win,” said WCCS coach Tom Jones. “The girls played an outstanding game. We really ramped up the defense.”

It was a true team effort for the Lady Lions, as they outscored Calvary 26-10 in the second half after trailing by two at halftime.

“Kiara Baker and Rachel Baker were oustanding on the boards, and McKenna Phelps did a great job distributing the ball,” Jones said. “Rebekah Erdman was oustanding on defense and our ninth graders, Krouse and Clark, played great.”

So what was the biggest difference from the first time around?

“We’re just really starting to gel,” Jones said. “The girls have really bought in on defense and we’re forcing teams into a lot of turnovers.”

The Lady Lions will enter play in the New Penn Christian Conference Tournament next Friday.

The Lions were limited to just nine points in the second half as Calvary came away with an 80-38 win.

Ethan Kerr had a strong game with 16 points, including 4 3s, while Jared Younger finished with 13 points.

“Ethan Kerr played a really solid game offensively and Jared Younger was strong on the boards,” Jones said. “We got into foul trouble in the second quarter and in the second half just couldn’t get it going.”

The Lions have a New Penn Christian Conference Tournament play-in game at home against Jamestown Bethel on Monday.
