Lady Knights drop finale to Cochranton

Eisenhower’s season came to a close on Monday, as they dropped a hard-fought battle with playoff-bound Cochranton, 42-22.
Coach Mike Logue made a tactical change in the second meeting between the teams this season, putting Leah Peterson in charge of guarding Cochranton’s leading scorer, Jaidan Martinec, who scored 16 points in the first game. This time around, she was limited to just four, but her teammates picked up the slack.
“Last time Martinec went off for a lot of points, so we put Leah on her tonight,” noted Logue. “We forced them to try and be more balanced, which they were.”
Both teams struggled to score in the early going, with the Lady Cardinals leading 8-2 after one.
Peterson connected on a jumper to open the second quarter, sparking an offensive spurt by both teams.

Cochranton’s Cathryn Miller nailed a 3 with 2:30 left in the half to give her team its first double digit lead of the game, 21-9, a margin they were able to build on.
Delaney Nizzi had another strong defensive game for Ike with four steals, as did Peterson with three blocks.
The game also marked the final contest for seniors Payton Mineweaser, Haley Spicer, Savannah McKown and Miranda Garris.
“Payton has been an a key player since her sophomore year,” noted Logue. “Haley, Savannah, Miranda and Payton have all been a part of the program since they were in seventh grade. It’s always sad to see them move on.”
McKown had a solid game with six points, and Emiley Wheeler had a team-high seven.

Kayla Freyermuth had eight points to pace Cochranton.
