Lady Bulldogs earn thrilling OT win over Erie First

The Tidioute Lady Bulldogs overcame a slow start to earn a thrilling 55-48 overtime win over Erie First Christian on Thursday.

“After a sloppy first quarter full of turnovers and poor shot selection, the girls had a 14-8 deficit to make up. A team effort and balanced scoring attack the second quarter gave us a 27-22 lead going into halftime,” said Tidioute coach Christy Valentine.

“Joleena Kanonczyki is hard to stop and I need the girls to step up. Greysen Fors took on the task in the second quarter and held Kanonczyki four points and we took advantage.”

Erie First responded in the third quarter, re-taking the lead thanks to a 14-6 run.

“We just can’t seem to put together four quarters in a row,” Valentine said.

“The third quarter we found ourselves trailing again. Foul trouble and poor defense let the Eagles get back into the game again.”

It was Tidioute’s turn to respond in the fourth quarter, however.

Nakiesha Krouse had another strong game with 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals. Sunny Henderson had 16 points and 8 rebounds and Fors added 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals.

“Sunny Henderson fouled out midway through the fourth quarter and we made some critical mistakes that led the Eagles to the foul line. The game ended in regulation at 45-45. At the beginning of overtime, Joleena Kanonczyki fouled out we took advantage and worked the ball to make smart shots. We began to stall with a minute and half left. The girls were patient and took care of the ball. We outscored the Eagles 10-3 in overtime to seal the victory.”

Kanonczyki finished with 29 points.

It was a big win for the Lady Bulldogs, as they now turn their attention to unbeaten and state-ranked North Clarion, led by senior star Tori Obenrader.

“I am very pleased with well balanced scoring tonight and the teamwork that I saw despite the many mistakes,” Valentine said. “The win was a team effort.”
