Knights looking for playoff success vs. Greyhounds

Troy Myer and the Eisenhower Knights play Wilmington today in the District 10 Class 2A quarterfinals at the Prep-Villa Events Center in Erie.

Eisenhower will bring a senior-laden team into today’s District 10 Class 2A quarterfinal game against Wilmington today (6 p.m. Prep-Villa Events Center).

The Greyhounds (12-11) have some experience of their own, having won last year’s D-10 title and winning a state playoff game.

They haven’t had quite the same success this season, but come into tonight’s contest after a convincing 80-38 first round win over Maplewood, which was playing without leading scorer Raheem Young.

The Knights (16-6) come into the game as hot as any team in District 10, winners of 12-straight, although they haven’t played a game since a 47-46 win over Youngsville last Tuesday.

Jaydon Hayes, a talented 6-3 senior forward, has led the way for Ike this season, averaging 19.1 ppg., including 11 games of more than 20 points and 40 and 38 point efforts.

At guard, lightning-quick Tajah Warren is second on the team in scoring at 10.1 ppg., having played his best basketball in the latter half of the season, averaging 16 ppg. in his last seven contests.

Point guard Troy Myer has overcame a knee injury sustained during football to be a steadying force, while Ross Venman is a lockdown defender.

Zack Fincher and Cyrus Hazeltine are the top outside shooting threats, with Fincher checking in at 7.9 ppg. and Hazeltine 6.8. Hazeltine returned from injury in the Youngsville game, burying four fourth quarter 3s, including the game-winner.

Alex Fincher, Nick Smelko and Drew Williams will also see plenty off time off the bench and have been key cogs in the Knights’ success.

They will be facing a Wilmington team that is very similar in a lot of ways.

Jacob Yoham, a 6-5 forward who averaged just 6 ppg. during the regular season, exploded for 26 in the win over Maplewood and could be an X-factor for the Greyhounds.

Danny Hanssen a 6-0 guard, leads the team in scoring and is one of four players to average in double figures at 13.0 ppg, while 6-4 forward Robert Pontius checks in at 11.1 ppg, forward Isaiah Jarzab 10.5 ppg. and Colton Richards 10.2 ppg.

Wilmington has notched wins against the likes of Neshannock and Mohawk out of the WPIAL this season, while the Knights have a signature win over Cambridge Springs.

The winner will face the Rocky Grove-Cochranton winner in the semifinals on Tuesday and punch their ticket to the state playoffs, as District 10 takes four teams from Class 2A.

The full bracket can be seen on Page B-4.

Starting at $4.00/week.
