Youngsville falls to Cochranton

Youngsville’s Emma Marino grabs an offensive rebound in the second quarter of a game against Cochranton at Youngsville High School, Monday, Jan. 15, 2018. Marino finished with eight points, but the Cardinals defeated the Eagles, 58-29.
Cochranton outscored Youngsville 33-9 in the second and third quarters as the Cardinals rolled to a 58-29 win at Youngsville Monday.
The Cardinals (5-7, 2-3 Region 3) forced 30 Eagles turnovers in the game.
“It’s frustrating,” Youngsville coach Andy Sveda said. “I’m at a loss for words.”
The Eagles (5-7, 2-4) kept pace early in the game, coming back from a 10-6 deficit to trail 12-10 after the first eight minutes.
“We started well and were moving the ball,” Sveda said.

Youngsville’s Kamryn Weissinger is fouled while going up for a shot during a game against Cochranton at Youngsville High School, Monday, Jan. 15, 2018.
Youngsville tied the game at 12-12 early in the second quarter, but Cochranton answered with a 6-0 run to take an 18-12 lead. Emma Marino grabbed an offensive rebound and put the ball in to make it 18-14 with 4:30 to play in the half.
That was as close as the Eagles would get the rest of the way.
Cochranton began stepping up in the passing lanes to create most of the 30 turnovers.
Even when the Eagles were able to get a shot off, they just weren’t falling.
“We couldn’t buy a bucket,” Sveda said. “We were missing easy shots inside.”
Cochranton just continued to apply defensive pressure and took advantage of the opportunities it created, building a 28-15 halftime lead.
Things just continued spiraling in the second half. The Eagles managed just four third-quarter points and the Cardinals had a comfortable 45-19 advantage heading into the final frame.
“Our defense fell apart too,” Sveda said.
Jaidan Martinec and Kayla Freyermuth were both in double figures for the Cardinals with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Cait Craig had nine points to lead the Eagles. Marino had eight points, despite seeing limited action due to foul trouble.
Youngsville will look to get back on track Thursday when the Eagles host Union City.
