Warren swimmers fall to McDowell
Warren swimmers welcomed McDowell into their pool Monday, and the guests took full advantage of their gracious hosts in a sweep.
McDowell’s boys won 117-52, while the Lady Trojans came away 120-53 winners.
“We swam against the mighty McDowell Trojans and they gave us some lessons,” Warren coach Russ Beyer said. “They have a good, young, strong team.”
Both Dragon teams picked up wins in the 100 backstroke and 400 free relay. Lydia Latimer continued her strong season with a win in the 100 back. Latimer trailed Jordan Nuzback through the early part of the race, but caught Nuzback on the third turn.
“Lydia got her legs through and came off the wall at the same time on the third turn,” Beyer said. “She was determined not to let (Nuzback) beat her. You could just tell Lydia was going to have a little kick at the end.”
She nearly picked up another win in the 50 free, but came up 0.2 behind the Trojans’ Emma Louie.
Despite not placing, Emily Savage qualified for districts in the 200 freestyle.
Andrew Beyer picked up the lone individual win for the boys. Russ Beyer said it’s merely coincidence both the boys and girls had individual 100 backstroke winners.
“They have that skill and it’s in them to do that stroke well,” Russ said. “They work hard and it’s just their niche.”
Hunter Smith quailified for districts in the 100 butterfly while Cade Johnson swam away with his best high school time in the 200 freestyle, while picking up a third-place finish.
“He’s in a zone right now in both the 200 and 400,” Russ Beyer said.
Johnson was third in the 400 as well.
The Dragons will face another tough challenge Thursday when they host Cathedral Prep & Villa Maria for Senior Night.
“This type of competition brings out the best in them,” Beyer said. “Senior Night’s always been a special event. We’ve seen a lot of fantastic swims (on Senior Night) and we want to keep that going.”
