State-ranked ECC too much for Sheffield

ST MARYS – Sheffield boys basketball coach Mike Knapp knows where he wants his program to be in the next few years.

Essentially, it’s where their hosts Monday night currently are.

Elk County Catholic demonstrated why its the No. 8 Single A team in the state with a 70-35 win over the Wolverines. The victory was also a milestone for coach Aaron Straub, his 800th career win.

“I give teams like Elk County and Ridgway credit. They’re disciplined, they’re well coached. That’s what we’re aspiriring to,” Knapp said.

For most of the season, the Wolverines (1-8, 0-1 AML North) have run into teams getting hot from behind the arc. On Monday, ECC’s (6-3, 3-2) Ryan Newton showed how a big man can lead a team to victory, scoring 24 points all from the low post.

“We couldn’t stop him,” Knapp said. “He’s a big guy and we didn’t have any answers.”

Knapp did credit junior Luke Davidson for going one-on-one with Newton for most of the game.

“Luke deserves credit,” Knapp said. “He was battling hard and did everything I asked him to. We couldn’t give him a lot of help because they have a lot of shooters.”

Cale Albaugh led the Wolverines with 13 points while Davidson and Tyler Hepinger had nine each. Albaugh added eight rebounds and Davidson pulled down seven boards.

Sheffield returns home Wednesday as the Wolverines host Brookville.
