Sheffield falls to Johnsonburg

Sheffield’s Matt Dunham goes up for a shot during the first quarter of Tuesday’s game against Johnsonburg.

Johnsonburg outscored Sheffield 40-15 in the second and third quarters en route to a 65-37 win over the hosts on Tuesday in an AML North battle.

Sheffield hung early, trailing just 15-11 after the first quarter, but a switch to a 2-3 zone by the Rams (8-4 overall, 3-1 AML) proved to be effective.

“We hung with them real well early,” said Sheffield coach Mike Knapp. “They came out in a man defense and we shot well and were aggressive.”

Cale Albaugh, who scored a team-high 12 points, is battling through an ankle sprain, with Knapp saying ‘he’s trying to fight through it, but it’s tough.’

The Rams got a balanced effort from top to bottom in opening up the lead, with Kacey Raubenstrauch scoring 12 points to lead the way.

“They switched to the zone, and I told the kids I’ll take responsibility,” Knapp said. “We’ve worked on it in practice, but we need to work on it more. Being a young team, there’s a big difference between the kids that have some experience and others who don’t.”

Albaugh also had seven rebounds and Matt Dunham six assists.

The Wolverines return to action on Friday at Kane.
