Lady Eagles drop Region 3 contest to Cambridge Springs

Youngsville’s Paige Mineweaser dribbles past a pair of Cambridge Springs defenders during their game at Youngsville High School, Monday, Jan. 8, 2018.

Points can be at a premium when playing the top tier teams in Region 3.

Youngsville’s girls found out exactly how premium in the third quarter of their game with visiting Cambridge Springs Monday.

The Eagles (4-6, 1-3 Region 3) went 5:43 between points in the period and the Blue Devils (7-2, 4-0) cruised to a 68-26 Region 3 win.

“Turnovers killed us,” Youngsville coach Andy Sveda said.

Caitlin Craig completed a three-point play with 5:45 to go in the third. Youngsville wouldn’t get another point until Craig hit a free throw with 2.7 seconds remaining in the frame.

Youngsville’s Cait Craig puts up a shot while being fouled during the third quarter of a game against Cambridge Springs at Youngsville High School, Mondy, Jan. 8, 2018. Craig completed the three-point play on the sequence, but then the Eagles went 5:43 without scoring another point and the Blue Devils rolled to a 68-26 Region 3 win.

The Blue Devils swarming trap defense created turnover after turnover and led to easy transition points.

“We just were not taking care of the ball,” Sveda said.

Youngsville nearly matched Cambridge Springs defensively in the first quarter as the Eagles were creating turnovers as well.

“I’m proud of the way we played defensively,” Sveda said.

The Eagles weren’t able to convert those turnovers into points; however, and trailed the Blue Devils 15-6 after the first quarter.

“The first quarter we played well,” Sveda said. “We missed easy baskets.”

Down 21-12 late in the second quarter, Youngsville had a golden opportunity to close the gap. Emma Marino was fouled while shooting a three-pointer. Marino was only able to go 1-3 from the free throw line and the Blue Devils’ Alex Miller hit back-to-back threes with just under a minute to go in the half to push the lead to 33-15 at halftime.

“I think (the turnovers) weighed on them,” Sveda said. “They compounded. If the easy shots would’ve fallen, it changes everything.”

Julia Malliard had 11 points while Miller, Abby Wescott and Ashton Hoover each finished with 10 points for the Blue Devils.

Craig had 11 points and Kamryn Weissinger had 6 points for the Eagles.

Youngsville will make the short trip northward to face cross-county rival Eisenhower Thursday in another Region 3 contest.
