Lady Dragons earn statement win in OT over McDowell

Warren's Rachel Wilson played another stellar game as the Lady Dragons earned a huge road win over McDowell.

ERIE – The Warren Lady Dragons went to McDowell on Monday in search of a statement win.

They got it.

In what has become one of the best rivalries in District 10, Warren outlasted the Lady Trojans in an overtime thriller, 42-36.

“It’s a rivalry, and it’s always going to be one because of our history together,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan. “We lost a close game at home against them without Autumn (Hultberg) and really wanted this one. It’s a good one to get, but when it’s in region, on the road against a team that got you before, it’s even better.”

She was referring to a 46-41 win for McDowell back on Jan. 4, and this game looked like it might be without the late-game drama that one had, as Warren (6-10 overall, 3-5 Region 6) led by 11 at halftime.

That wasn’t the case, however, as McDowell came out red-hot from 3 in the third quarter, courtesy of junior guard Courtney Herbe, who knocked down four shots from distance.

McDowell tied the game at the end of the third and Warren had to rally, trailing by as many as six in the fourth quarter.

“They got up six in the fourth and we turned up the pressure,” LaVan said. “Kelsey Stuart came off the bench and gave us some fresh legs and did a really good job. As a freshman, she’s starting to come along.”

Julia Miller tied the game on a free throw, 34-34 with 20 seconds, and Warren had a good look that didn’t go in. With four seconds left, McDowell threw the ball away, and then, with fouls to give, gave one to Margo Loutzenhiser. The second time they tried to do so, however, Loutzenhiser stepped through and was able to get a shot off at the buzzer that glanced off the front of the rim.

No matter, however, as Warren took control in overtime.

Taylor Childress hit a pull-up jumper out of the gates and, after McDowell tied the game, Autumn Hultberg knocked down a jumper from the corner to give the Lady Dragons a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The Lady Dragons got a stop on the ensuing possession and Loutzenhiser went 4 of 4 from the line to preserve the win.

Loutzenhiser had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Hultberg added 11 points

In addition to Herbe’s 12 points, Emina Selimovic added 11 for McDowell.

LaVan noted again the tremendous defensive effort of Rachel Wilson on the 5-11 Miller, as well as big minutes from Gracie Wood and Ceci Citro.

“Rachel Wilson annihilated on defense again, she just shut Miller down,” she said. “Ceci is really coming along. She’s really stepped up and done well with her role.”

Warren returns to action Thursday at Corry.
