Lady Dragons beat Corry in Hultberg’s return

Warren’s Autumn Hultberg goes up for a shot during Tuesday’s Region 6 contest against Corry. Hultberg made her return after missing seven games due to injury in the Lady Dragons’ 62-29 win.

The Warren Lady Dragons got back in the win column in a big way on Tuesday, beating Corry 62-29 at Joseph A. Massa Gymnasium.

The win was significant in more ways in than one, as they also welcomed back senior point guard Autumn Hultberg, who returned after missing seven games due to injury.

It had been tough-sledding for Warren since a season-opening win over Moniteau, with a brutally tough schedule coupled with the injury setback, but this win just may be the thing that gets them going.

“It’s good to get one for sure,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan. “We were headed in the right direction anyway, even with some of those losses.”

Four players scored in double figures, led by Margo Loutzenhiser’s 16 points, as Warren (2-8 overall, 1-3 Region 6), jumped out to a big lead right from the get-go, 16-2.

Hultberg came off the bench and entered four minutes into the contest, immediately making her presence felt with a steal and an assist.

“You see it, she takes us to another level,” LaVan said. “We play faster with her. We play smarter I think with her. I thought we did some good things while she was away – we learned a lot about ourselves as a team. It’s great to have her back and she’s pretty happy to be back.”

Rachel Wilson, Gracie Wood and Taylor Childress were all in double figures scoring for the Lady Dragons, with Wilson posting a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Childress hit a 3 early in the second quarter to make it 21-6 and started a 12-0 run with back-to-back layups. Freshman guard Kelsey Stuart capped the spurt with a steal and layup and Wood scored the final four points of the half to make it 39-13.

The Lady Dragons were firing on all cylinders, as Loutzenhiser hit three-straight jump shots in the third, Hultberg got her first points in her return with a steal and layup that was sandwiched in between a pair of Wood 3’s that gave them a commanding lead after three quarters.

It was a strong effort from start-to-finish with everyone contributing.

Hultberg, Morgan Lupole and Stuart all dished out two assists, while Hultberg and Stuart also had a pair of steals each.

Now, it’s all about moving forward, with another Region 6 contest on Friday at Fort LeBoeuf

“We grew up a lot over these last seven games without Autumn,” LaVan said. “Even at 2-8, the bullseye is still on our back. Teams still want to beat us. That’s what happens when you establish a strong program. Our kids have worked really hard to get it to where it is. Teams are going to be gunning for us, so we have to be ready every time we step out on the floor.”
