Knights finish second at Sharon; earn invite to District 10 duals

Joey Bauer and the Eisenhower Knights finishes second at the Sharon Duals on Saturday and on Sunday found out they qualified for the District 10 team duals.

SHARON – It was a very good weekend for the Eisenhower Knights.

On Saturday, they finished second at the Sharon Duals and on Sunday they found out that they qualified for the District 10 team duals.

“Until you actually see it, you’re still wondering,” said Eisenhower coach Kris Black about the invite. “It’s nice to be the four seed going in. Obviously we’ll have to wrestle well to be top three. It’s nice for the program. It adds some validity to what we’re doing. I think we’re headed in the right direction.”

On Saturday, the Knights had some dominating performances.

They opened the day with a 66-3 over Chartiers-Houston and followed that up with a 54-21 victory over Fox Chapel.

A 66-12 handling of Sharon and a close 39-32 win over Peters Township took them to the finals, where they lost a tight battle with Shaler, 41-39, for the title.

“Overall the kids wrestled really well,” Black said. “We would have liked to have been first, but I thought realistically, wrestling some of the big schools, our guys battled.”

And there were a number of standouts. Too many, in fact, to pick just one.

“I thought our guys really did a great job as a team – there’s not one kid I could say stood out more than anyone else,” Black said. “Everyone came together and did a fantastic job. It was nice to see some different schools … we were able to see some different things.”

Now, the Knights turn their attention to the 8-team D-10 Class 2A duals on Saturday, back in Sharon.

Ike will meet Conneaut in the first round at 9 a.m., should they win, they would wrestle the winner of the Reynolds-Fort LeBoeuf matchup at 3 p.m.

On the other side of the bracket, Greenville will battle Mercer and Sharpsville takes on Harbor Creek.

The championship will be at 5 p.m. The top team automatically qualifies for the state team duals, while the runner-up will host the No. 3 team out of the WPIAL and the No. 3 team will travel to the second seed from District 6.

“Coming into the year, we thought we could be pretty good,” Black said. “This is a unique group. I don’t think we really have just one guy. Spencer (Head) and Logan (Jaquay) are having great years, but we have a lot of guys that have 15, 16 wins and it’s really just a team effort. It’s a fun group to be around. They work hard and enjoy what they’re doing. More than any of the other teams I’ve coached before, they really want success for each other. They root for each other and I think that’s a big reason for our success.”
