Ike girls power past Iroquois

Emily Wheeler had 14 points in Eisenhower's 46-30 win over Iroquois on Thursday.

The low post duo of Emily Wheeler and Lydia Giannini scored 14 points each as Eisenhower rolled to a 46-30 win over visiting Iroquios Thursday.

A 17-point second quarter outburst sparked the Knights (4-5, 2-1 Region 3) win.

“We worked the ball (down low) in the second,” Eisenhower coach Mike Logue said. “We dominated inside in the second.”

The inside game represents a bit of a transition for Eisenhower.

“We’re very blessed to have a lot of good post players right now,” Logue said. “A few years ago, we were more guard dominant. With Wheeler, Giannini and (Shelby) Kuzminski, we have three solid, young post players.”

Giannini finished with a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds to go along with her 14 points.

“Giannini is a moose inside. She dominates on the boards (because) she works hard, gets good position and isn’t afraid to box out,” Logue said.

Eisenhower clamped down defensively on the Braves (1-6, 0-3) in the first half, limiting Iroquois to just 11 points.

“We’ve been working really hard on team defense and we’re getting better,” Logue said. “Our moments of good rotation and playing team defense are getting longer and longer. Now we need to work on doing it the entire game.”

Payton Mineweaser had five assists for the Knights.

“It was a nice night for her too,” Logue said. “She was able to get the ball into the post.”

The Knights will look to carry the momentum from this win into an important week next week. Eisenhower has a pair of Region 3 games, at Saegertown Monday and home against Youngsville Thursday, before stepping out of District play to face cross-county rival Sheffield Friday.

“Next week is a big week,” Logue said. “Saegertown has always given us fits. They play zone and they play it very well. We have to keep shooting the ball well and rebounding.”
