MEADVILLE – The Warren vollyeball train kept rolling on Thursday with a 3-1 (25-13, 17-25, 25-20, 25-11) win over Meadville.

The win was the second this season for the Dragons over the Bulldogs.

“We served really tough, that seemed to be the difference in a couple of the games, as all of our servers recorded at least one ace against a good passing team,” said Warren coach Mike Dolan. “Other than the second game we also passed well in serve-receive.”

Leading the way for Warren were Ellie Lobdell (18 kills, 9 digs, 2 aces), Lydia Latimer (12 kills, 23 digs, 5 aces), Celia Chase (11 kills, 4 aces), Lex Nyquist (43 assists, 8 digs, 1 ace), Jordan Sitler (4 kills), Julia Lobdell (11 digs, 4 aces), Kelsey Dilks (4 digs), and

Grace Wortman (6 kills, 4 aces).

With the win, Warren improves to 9-1 and remains in second place in Region 4.

“We stayed aggressive on offense and for the most part our attacks were pretty effective,” Dolan said. “Jordan Sitler got more involved as the games progressed and had a nice match at the net. Lex mixed up the offense well and kept all the hitters involved.”

The JV team played well but dropped a 19-25, 29-27, 4-15 decision.

Leading Warren were Hannah Shattuck (5 kills, 4 aces), Olivia English (6 kills, 4 digs) and Jackie Peterson (14 assists, 2 kills).

The Dragons return to action on Tuesday at home against unbeaten and defending state champion Corry.

WCCS 3, ERIE FIRST CHRISTIAN 1

ERIE – In a matchup of two of the top teams in the New Penn Christian Conference, the Warren County Christian School Lady Lions rallied from a rough first set to earn a 3-1 (3-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-13).

“I think the girls were nerved up a little big, but once we settled down, we were able to play our game,” said WCCS coach Mark Brenner.”

Leading the way for the Lady Lions were Lydia Cox (8 service points, 1 ace, 6 kills, 9 digs), Becca Erdman (7 service points, 1 ace, 1 kill, 14 assists, 6 digs), McKenna Phelps (4 service points, 2 aces, 1 kill, 2 digs, 1 block), Rachel Brenner (13 service points, 5 aces, 10 kills, 12 digs), Rachel Brenner (6 service points, 1 ace, 5 assists, 1 dig) and Kiara Baker (9 service points, 5 kills, 3 digs, 4 blocks).

“Rachel got on a serving run that really brought us back into our game,” coach Brenner said. “We’ve been focusing on mental toughness. Each of the girls had a mantra and it really worked. They all did their jobs and I’m very proud.”

The Lady Lions also won the JV contest, 25-20, 22-25, 15-12.

Emily Cox (6 service points, 1 ace, 1 dig), Rachel Beatty (5 service points, 1 kill, 1 ace, 10 assists), McKenna Phelps (4 service points, 3 aces, 5 kills, 3 blocks, 2 digs), Gracia Clark (team-leading 8 service points, 4 kills, 2 aces, 3 digs), Jael Brenner (1 service points) and Kiara Baker (3 service points, 2 aces, 4 kills, 4 blocks) led the way.

MAPLEWOOD 3, EISENHOWER 0

Despite a 25-9, 25-8, 25-5 setback to state powerhouse Maplewood on Thursday, coach Scott Olson believed his team played as good as they have all season.

“The score doesn’t show that, but that’s the best we’ve played all season,” he said. “From the last time we played them, we cut our unforced errors, we got more attacks and earned more points.”

Leading Ike were Cameran Edwards with three kills and 10 digs, and Currie Hultman and Tess Morningstar with two kills each.

The JV team fell in two sets. Ashlee VanGuilder had two kills and Destiny Nelson six digs.

“We had more team unity and we played together for the first time this season for a whole match,” Olson said. “We have the Sheffield tournament on Saturday and I’m anxious to see what happens.”

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS 3, YOUNGSVILLE 0

Youngsville was unable to carry the momentum from a “Pink Out” win to Cambridge Springs as the Blue Devils swept the Eagles 25-6, 25-7 and 25-8.

“We had trouble putting together any plays,” Youngsville coach Barb Lutton said. “They were strong at the net and not much got through.”

The Eagles had a number of service errors through the match and Lutton said Cambridge Springs showed some offensive sets the Eagles hadn’t seen before.

“They were running some shoot sets and quick offense and we were having trouble picking them up,” she said. “We hadn’t even seen that from Maplewood or any of the other big teams in the league.”

Emma Marino led the Eagles with five kills, while Amber McAfoose had five blocks and Amber Evans had six assists in the loss.

The Eagles will take part in the Sheffield Tournament Saturday.

JV CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS 2, YOUNGSVILLE 0

Cambridge Springs won the junior varsity contest 25-19 and 25-12.

Kamryn Weissinger led a balanced offensive attack with five service points while Jena Wilson had seven assists and Mallory Sherrard and Krystal Kinney had two blocks each.

The JV team will take part in the Elk County Catholic Tournament Saturday.
