Sheffield tops county rival Ike

Sheffield’s Eliza Davidson goes up for a kill during Tuesday’s match against Eisenhower.

Sheffield and Eisenhower don’t get to see each other very often on the volleyball court, but when they do, they make it count.

On Tuesday it was the Wolverines’ night, as they beat the host Knights 3-0, 25-10-25-18, 25-11.

“The girls like playing the cross-county teams,” said Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay. “A lot of them play club ball together and a lot of them are friends.”

The first set was all Sheffield, as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back. Eliza Davidson and Callen Copley each had early kills, while Laurel Connelly and Lexi Lyon took over in the middle part of the set, keying a 9-1 run that made it 16-5 before a kill by Eisenhower’s Tess Morningstar.

An ace by Mya Grubbs and a kill by Davidson helped close out the first for the Wolverines.

“It was a good game,” Lemay said. “I thought we ran our offense quite well.”

The second set started out much like the first, as Lyon helped Sheffield get out to an 11-6 lead with three kills.

Eisenhower coach Scott Olson called timeout and what followed was a rally that saw Ike cut the deficit to 14-12 after a kill by Cameran Edwards.

“We just faced a pretty good Sheffield team tonight,” Olson said. “I thought we played well though.”

Sheffield responded with a run of its own, with Connelly and Mya Grubbs both playing key roles as the lead extended to 21-13, with the Wolverines eventually closing it out.

The third set was all Eisenhower at the start, as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held a 6-3 edge after a kill by Emiley Wheeler.

Sheffield answered back, taking their first lead at 9-8 on a Copley ace.

That was part of a run of 11 straight service points for Copley that included a pair of aces. By the time Eisenhower got its next point it was 18-9 and the Wolverines were well on their way to the sweep.

“We only had three service errors,” noted Lemay. “We played Eisenhower on Saturday in the Kane Tournament and we were able to correct some holes in our defense.”

Leading Sheffield were Copley (19 service points, 7 digs, 5 assists), Mya Grubbs (7 service points, 20 assists, 11 digs), Davidson (7 service points, 8 kills), Connelly (5 kills, 2 blocks), Lyon (10 kills, 5 service points, 4 blocks) and Taya Bailey (13 digs, 6 service points.

Eisenhower won the JV contest, 25-18, 25-9.

For Olson, he was proud of how far his team has coming during his first season as coach.

“It’s night and day from where we started,” he said. “These girls have worked hard and battled through adversity.”

For the Knights, whose season concluded, Olson said they will have open gyms and a lifting program during the offseason to continue to improve.

Sheffield concludes its season on Thursday, hosting another county rival, Youngsville, on senior night.

Eisenhower’s Currie Hultman (7) fires a ball over the net.
