Lady Knights earn 2-0 win

Eisenhower’s Aleea Giese shoots the ball into Maplewood’s keeper during their match at Eisenhower High School, Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017.

Eisenhower’s girls soccer team fired more than 20 shots on goal against Maplewood Thursday.

Though only two found the back of the net, that was plenty for the Knights in a 2-0 home victory.

“It still wasn’t a complete game,” said coach Diana Elmquist. “But we came out strong. I’m excited.”

Less than five minutes into the game, Eisenhower’s Terry Lee Talasky broke free down the middle, forcing Maplewood’s keeper to make a tough save.

Talasky had four more breakaway chances before she was able to solve the Tigers’ keeper.

At 27:58 she again came on a rush down the middle. This time she put the ball just out of the keeper’s reach on the short side to give the Knights (2-0) a 1-0 lead.

Just over five minutes later, Aniela Gesing nearly snuck one in from 15 yards.

The ball looked like it would sail high, but dropped just before the goal line, forcing a save.

“I felt we were focused on making good passes,” Elmquist said.

Talasky forced the issue again just 40 seconds in to the second half. She came free down the middle, and this time the keeper came out to challeng her, diving at the ball just before Talasky could get a shot off.

Four minutes later, Leah Peterson put a shot just high as it barely went over the crossbar. At 8:45, Aleea Giese got a breakaway of her own, but again, the keeper challenged and prevented a shot attempt.

Giese had a strong second half. She made a long centering pass to Talasky just before the midpoint of the half, but Talasky couldn’t get enough leg on it to push it in. Later, during a two-on-one with Talasky, Giese took a shot that went just to the right of the net mouth.

“That’s how we try to play all the time,” Elmquist said. “Using the whole field and if we start to see someone applying pressure, we’re going to go to them.”

The Knights were able to convert all that pressure to a goal at 32:19. Peterson fired a shot from near the left corner. The keeper knocked it away, but the rebound went straight to Talasky’s waiting foot. She snuck the ball under the crossbar to close out the scoring.

“We passed. We made plays and we wore them out,” Elmquist said.

The Knights next travel to Seneca Tuesday.
