Lady Dragons continue strong play with 7-0 win over Corry

Warren freshman Kyliegh Wilson.

CORRY – The Warren Lady Dragons got their second win of the week, 7-0 over Corry on Thursday.

The win moves them to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in Region 5.

The Lady Dragons put pressure on Corry from the whistle and never let up. Kyra Wotorson and Lexie Grubbs scored two goals each, while MJ Fadale, Mackenzie Bickling and Hanna Ruland each added one. It was Ruland’s first varsity goal.

It didn’t take long for the Lady Dragons to find the back of the net. Just minutes into the game. Freshman Kyra Wotorson was able to find a well placed through ball from Mackenzie Bickling and easily beat the Beaver keeper with a well paced shot. Within minutes Lexie Grubbs was able to collect a loose ball and fire it on target for the second goal. Bickling capped off a strong first ten minutes of play from the Lady Dragons by sinking a long range shot .

“We came to play,” said Warren coach Jeremy Bickling. “I couldn’t be more proud of how we started the match and the way we played.”

Near the mid point of the first half the Dragons were awarded a direct kick on a foul. Mackenzie Bickling lined up to do her duties taking the free kick . Instead of hammering the shot she made a quick unexpected pass to an open Wotorson for her second goal of the game and Bickling’s second assist.

“Mack made a really smart and unselfish play,” coach Bickling said. “She’s always a threat with her set piece shots but she found the perfect pass for Kyra to finish off.”

The first half scoring didn’t end there. MJ Fadale muscled in a goal for short range bringing the first half to a close with the Lady Dragons lead 5-0 .

“I can’t think of too many times we have played that complete of a half,” noted Bickling. “Despite the frequent goal scoring in the first half, the defense was the real star. Smith, Susz , Egger, Kelsey Fadale and Neureiter were impenetrable. The back line played smart and intense. “

The second half opened with more of the same. Warren continued to fire shots on goal with their high powered attack. Grubbs found a excellent feed from Neureiter for her second goal at the 30 minute mark of the second half .

“We’ve put up 23 goals in just 3 games,” Bickling noted. “I think our attack is more potent then last year’s. Our left side has really stepped up this season and helped contribute goals. Lexie is playing at a whole new level this season”

With the game in hand , the Lady Dragons started getting some of the reserves into the game to get region play experience.

Some of the most memorable moments of a season happen when you get players into a game when they didn’t expect it . Nearing the end of the second half , sophomore Hanna Ruland made one of those memorable moments. After several near misses Ruland was able to time a perfect run to slip past the defender with the ball and finish off a perfect shot past the keeper for her first varsity goal.

“Hanna is one of the hardest working and most dedicated players on the team,” Bickling said. “With a team packed with talent, it’s hard to get all the girls the chances you would like. Hanna got her chance and made the most of it .”

Warren returns to action on Saturday, hosting North East at 11 a.m.
