Pennsylvania rallies for 48-30 win in Big 30
BRADFORD – Eleven recent Warren County high school graduates got to strap on the pads one more time at the high school level.
Eisenhower’ Spencer Gray, John Hummell, Hunter McNutt and Adam Pascuzzi, Warren’s Joey Carlson, Brendon Mattson and Hayden Salapek, Sheffield’s Mason Albaugh, Gabe Donato and Cam Retterer and Youngsville’s Ryan Bush took the field one final time at the high school level at the 44th annual Big 30 All-Star Charities Classic at Bradford’s Parkway Field.
Trailing 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, Pennsylvania came alive, outscoring their foes from New York 48-16 the rest of the way en route to a 48-30 win. That run included a 28-7 second half.
Pennsylvania’s second straight win cut New York’s lead to 22-20-2 in the series pitting graduated seniors from each side of the border.
The point total was only eight points off a Big 30 record.
Pennsylvania’s defense also played a big role in the comeback, as they forced five turnovers, including an pick six by Ridgway’s Jacob Anderson. High School teammate Josh Raubenstrach had two of the five interceptions.
The comeback started with Pennsylvania trailing 14-0. Coudersport’s Aaron Wolfinger recovered a fumbled punt at the New York 26, and the Keystone state scored on the next play, as Bradford’s Kyle Kirk connected with St. Marys’ Parker Smith on a touchdown pitch and catch.
Wolfinger was responsible for another momentum play in the third quarter, intercepting a pass with New York driving at the PA 32.
The Keystone state took advantage, turning the pick into 12-yard touchdown run by Otto-Eldred’s Seth Drummond to go up two scores.
New York scored on its first two possessions to take a 14-0 lead. Randolph’s Jake Beaver threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Frewsburg’s Cordell O’Brien on fourth-and-goal. Then Bolivar-Richburg’s Devin Carr scored on a 2-yard run after ripping off a 10-yard run on fourth-and-7 to extend the drive.
Pennsylvania had a strong rushing duo in Otto-Eldred’s Seth Drummond (93 yards) and St. Marys’ Matt Marconi (71). Drummond scored a pair of touchdown’s and Elk County Catholic quarterback Nate DaCanal connected with Bradford’s Dawson Ambrose on a pair of touchdown receptions for Pennsylvania.
Leading New York on the ground were Gowanda’s Kameron Alexander (85 yards) and Pioneer’s Jason Gauthier (84).
