New features highlight upcoming ACS golf tournament

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the annual American Cancer Society Golf Tournament, slated for Aug. 2.

With that milestone mark will come some changes. Most notable among those is the switch from Conewango Valley Country Club to Jackson Valley Golf Club. CVCC still remains an active part of the tournament, but the goal is to have all the golf courses in the county experience the tournament, according to John Papalia, Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry (WCCBI) Director of Chamber Operations and Tourism

“The tournament is run by a committee of volunteers, with support from the American Cancer Society, and the committee decided to rotate the tournament each year,” he said. “This year it’s at Jackson and we hope to have it at Blueberry and Cable Hollow as well. We can hopefully gain some new golfers and showcase everything Warren County has to offer.”

In terms of the tournament itself, there will also be a few changes. The men’s and women’s tournaments used to run on separate days, but now they will be combined into a men’s division and mixed (co-ed) division, both to be played on Aug. 2. The tournament will also now be a scramble format.

“Traditionally there have been two tournaments, but we’re thinking we can fill the course up and get everyone together for one event and have a lot of fun,” Papalia said. “We hope to be right around the 30 to 36 team mark – that’s a full field for us. The committee felt some changes were needed to get more golfers back to the table and hopefully this will boost up that team count.”

The fee is $300 per team ($75 per person), which includes greens fees and cart, as well as lunch, dinner and awards. There will be shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

There are also many different levels of sponsorship, ranging from a ‘Presenting Sponsor’ to individual recognition, all of which can be viewed on the WCCBI’s website (https://wccbi.org/).

“Our plan is to highlight the missions of the American Cancer Society and remind people why we are doing this in the first place,” Papalia said. “Everyone in some degree has been affected by cancer and that’s the ultimate reason why we do this and what we’re hoping to highlight in this the 40th year. Warren County is a very generous place – not only Warren County but the entire region. Warren County drives this tournament with the sponsorships and the teams that we get.”

Anyone with questions can contact Papalia (jpapalia@wccbi.org) or Anna Marie Labowski with the American Cancer Society (Anna-marie.labowski@Cancer.org).

Online registration is also available through the WCCBI website.

“We’re still taking teams, so you can get your foursome together,” Papalia said. “This is ultimately about having a good time and raising funds for a good cause.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
