Cummings earns Co-Player of the Year honors in Region 6 as 6 Dragons honored

From left to right, Warren Dragons baseball players Matt Leonard, Colby Johnson, Derek Knapp, Aidan Morrison, Seth Baldensperger and Austyn Cummings show off their all-region hardware at their end of year picnic and awards presentation.

In a season that saw them go 17-5 and share the Region 6 title with Harbor Creek and advance to the District 10 Class 4A semifinals, the Warren Dragons were well-represented on the Region 6 all-star team.

Sophomore outfielder Austyn Cummings shared Region 6 Player of the Year honors with General McLane’s Jon Solberg, while sophomore catcher Aidan Morrison and senior designated hitter Seth Baldensperger were also first-teamers.

After a solid freshman campaign, Cummings emerged as a serious run-producer for a Dragon offense that scored at least six runs in 10 of its final 11 games. He led the team with a .429 batting average, 20 RBIs and also walked 17 times and struck out just eight while serving as the Dragons’ right fielder. His on-base percentage was a whopping .549.

Solberg led the Lancers, one of just two teams to beat the Dragons in region play, with a .415 average and 12 stolen bases.

Like Cummings, Morrison also started as a freshman and saw his game improve in his sophomore campaign. After a slow start at the plate, he went on to hit .294 with 17 RBIs and a team-leading nine extra-base hits. Where he really excelled was behind the plate, serving as a tremendous backstop for a pitching staff that posted a team ERA of 2.30. He also shut down opposing teams’ running games, with baserunners rarely taking off against the Dragons and usually getting thrown out when they did.

Baldensperger, one of two seniors for the Dragons, emerged as not only a team leader but a standout both at the plate and on the mound. At the plate where he was honored, he hit .370 and tied with Cummings for the team-lead in RBIs with 20. He also scored 21 runs and had a .440 on-base percentage. On the mound, he went 3-0 with a 2.71 ERA.

In addition to those three, juniors Matt Leonard, Derek Knapp and Colby Johnson were all named second-team all-stars.

Leonard, voted as a utility player, emerged as a top flight pitcher for the Dragons this season, posting a 6-1 record, 1.16 ERA in 42 1/3 innings pitched and 32 strikeouts, all team bests. At the plate he had a .243 average and six RBIs.

Johnson was a great two-way player for the Dragons, going 5-2 with a 1.83 ERA in 38 1/3 innings pitched. At the plate, he teamed with Knapp atop the lineup, getting on-base at a .482 clip to go along with a .306 average and 17 runs scored while primarily playing left field when he wasn’t pitching.

Knapp, meanwhile, served as the second baseman and leadoff hitter, posting a .301 average and a .427 on-base percentage while scoring 21 runs. He also had six doubles and led the team with 89 total plate appearances.

The region all-stars are voted on by the region coaches.
