Warren softball drops close one to Titusville

TITUSVILLE — Warren came out on the losing end of its second straight Region 6 nailbiter on Tuesday, 7-6 at Titusville.

The Dragons beat Titusville in 10 innings earlier this season and, this time, led 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Alyssa Leithead’s two-run double walked it off for the Rockets.

“I’ve read once or twice, ‘Nothing in the world is worth having or doing unless it comes from effort, pain, difficulty…,'” said Warren coach Jon Sitler, whose Dragons are now 10-4 overall and 6-4 in the region. “It’s not fun to watch the other team celebrate at the pitching circle two nights in a row… But, hopefully, that will push us and motivate us the rest of the way. That’s what we want.”

Warren led 3-0 in the top of the first with a leadoff walk by Alexis Nyquist, single from Maddie Loutzenhiser, and Megan Wortman was hit by pitch to lead the bases. Kiersten Hoffman delivered an RBI single and Ellie Lobdell a two-run single.

After Titusville scored twice in the third, Warren used a three-run fifth to again up the lead — all with two outs. Megan Wortman, Hoffman and Gracie Wood had back-to-back-to-back hits to load the bases before Lobdell’s bases-loaded walk made it 4-2, and Grace Wortman added a two-run single.

“We always have the potential to answer any team,” said Sitler. “But not when they do it in their last at bats.”

Titusville cut the lead to 6-4 in the fifth with a hit batter, base hit, walk, and double steal.

The bottom of the seventh started with an error, two consectuive hits and a walk with Warren holding a 6-5 lead. Ellie Lobdell, who struck out nine and walked four, got two outs before the game-winning double.

“We can compete in any game we are in,” said Sitler. “There are things we know we can improve on, and that starts Wednesday.”

Loutzenhiser and Hoffman each finished 2-for-4 for Warren, which visits Franklin on Thursday.

Titusville is 10-4 overall and 5-4 in region.
