Number of Dragons with standout efforts in WCTM victory

Sheffield's Smir Melton gets set to take off at the start of the 4x100 meter relay.

It was an impressive performance for the Warren boys at the Warren County Track Meet, as they rolled to victory with 127 points. Eisenhower (53.5) and Youngsville (53) were pretty much dead even in the race for second.

The Dragon duo of Blake Ristau and Troy Shattuck shared Track MVP honors, as did the Youngsville pair of Owen Engstrom and Jordan Keyes for Field MVP. For Shattuck, he becomes the second member of his family to win Track MVP honors, as brother Ryan was a two-time winner in 2014 and 2015.

Ristau won the 1600 (4:47) and 3200 (11:20.52) and both he and Shattuck were on the winning 1600 and 3200 relay teams. The 1600 relay team also consisted of Nathan Edwards and Beau Paris, while Paris and Devon Navaroli were also on the winning 3200 team.

Shattuck, meanwhile, ran another blistering time in the 400 (52.34) and also won the 800 (2:16.48) over a strong challenge from Eisenhower’s Garrett Head.

Keyes, two days after throwing a PR in the javelin to help beat Eisenhower, tossed another PR of 146-8. He needed that to win, too, with a strong challenge from Sheffield’s Cale Albaugh, who qualified for the D-9 championships with a toss of 145-10 1/2. Keyes also finished second in the discus.

Engstrom bounced around between the track and the field. Two days after a PR of 42-5 in the triple jump, he leaped the exact same distance to take first in a close battle with Warren’s Kyle Adams (42-2 1/2). He added a second place in the long jump (20-2), just one inch shy of the mark set by Warren’s Ben Thomas, who had an outstanding meet of his own.

Thomas ran an excellent time of 11.19 to win the 100 and also won the 200 (23.82) over his teammate Adams, who also had a strong day.

Thomas, Adams, Edwards and Marvin Bryant combined to set the mark in the 4×100 relay, winning with a time of 45.22.

Eisenhower’s Jonah Samuelson also rose to the occasion, running a PR of 15.57 to win the 110 hurdles while also taking first in the 300s (42.57).

Elsewhere in the field, Warren had three more wins with Noah Becker in the shot put (38-4), Tristan Davis in the high jump (5-6) and freshman Zach Zinger in the discus (111-3).

They also got a PR from Noah Butcher in the 110 hurdles (16.45), finishing second behind Samuelson and qualifying for districts, as well as Navaroli in the 1600 (4:48), as he finished just a stride behind his teammate Ristau, with the freshman also qualiying for districts in that event.

“There were so many positive points to be taken away from today’s meet. Nearly every boy who ran, jumped, or threw today scored points,” said Warren coach Kevin Dustin. “It’s difficult to pick highlights to talk about because there were so many. Noah Butcher and Devon Navarolli both qualified for districts today for the first time. Noah in the 110m hurdles and Devon in the 1600m. I was incredibly impressed with how strong our guys team was today and showed up to compete. It really was a great job all around.”

The District 10 championships will be held on May 20 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, OH. The District 9 2A championships will be the same day at Brookville High School.
