In meet that comes down to final event, Eagles edge Knights, 71-70

Youngsville’s Owen Engstrom turns in a winning performance in the 400 meter dash.

Youngsville’s boys track and field team may be small, but they have plenty of fight.

Against county rival Eisenhower, they notched a win by the slimmest of margins, 71-70 as the meet came down to the final event – the javelin. Jordan Keyes tossed a winning throw of 145-11 to secure the win for the Eagles. The throw was a personal best for Keyes, as he qualified for districts in the process.

“We’re doing this basically with 10 kids, we’re spread pretty thin,” said Youngsville coach Michelle Johnson. “The boys wanted to get at least one (win) and they were able to do it. That was a big PR for Jordan in the javelin.”

There were some impressive performances on both sides, perhaps none more so than Youngsville’s Owen Engstrom. All the senior did was win all four events he was in (200, 400, long jump, triple jump), popping a 42-5 in the triple jump, a career best.

“He’s getting real close to districts in the 200 also,” noted Johnson.

Eisenhower’s Troy Myer takes off in the 4x100 meter relay.

Mik Fehlman picked up two big first place finishes in the 1600 and 3200, while Aaron Morris won the high jump and was second in both hurdle races and Mason Benjamin won the shot put and even put in an appearance in the 400.

Ethan Benedict, Noah Myers, Braden Wilson, Dylan Burt and Brett Sowa also picked up key points for the Eagles to help them to victory.

For Eisenhower, Jonah Samuelson was impressive in winning both hurdle races, edging Morris in both.

Kelly Glotz won the 100 for Ike, Garrett Head the 800 and Brandon Sweet the discus. The Knights also swept all three relays.

Both teams return to action Thursday at War Memorial Field for the Warren County meet.

Eisenhower’s Jonah Samuelson clears the final hurdle of the 300 hurdles on his way to victory during Tuesday’s meet at Youngsville.
