Ike girls top Youngsville in county battle

Youngsville’s Naomi Swartzbaugh takes the handoff from teammate Linsey Jukes in the 4x1 relay during Tuesday’s meet against Eisenhower at Mike Shine Field.

Eisenhower and Youngsville met for a good old county battle at Mike Shine Field on Tuesday. In the end, it was the Ike girls that came away with a hard-fought 94 1/2-46 1/2 win.

The action was fierce right out of the gate in the 100 hurdles race in which Youngsville’s Naomi Swartzbaugh edged Ike’s Tiffany Work – 16.8 to 16.9.

“That was a great race,” said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue.

Youngsville coach Michelle Johnson had similar thoughts: “That was a really good race that we’ll get to see again on Thursday (at the Warren County Meet),” she said.

It actually started before that for Eisenhower in the first event, the 4×800 relay consisting of Alecia Straight, Sandra Richards, Mattison Wallin and Tess Morningstar.

Eisenhower’s Kirsten Baran tosses a winning throw in the shot put during Tuesday’s meet at Youngsville.

“They ran some really nice splits. That was a good race for us,” Logue said.

A pair of freshman for the Lady Knights – Caroline Smelko and Emily Wheeler came up bit in the jumps, with Smelko clearing 4-6 to win the high jump and Wheeler with a leap of 28-11 1/2 to win the triple jump.

“Two freshman that really stepped up today,” noted Logue.

Youngsville senior distance runner Brooke Messinger was once again outstanding, sweeping the 800, 1600 and 3200.

“Those will be some good races with Warren’s distance runners on Thursday,” noted Johnson.

Logue, sensing it could potentially be a close race in the team scoring, moved Delaney Nizzi out of the 100 hurdles and into the 200, which paid off.

“She came through by going 1-2 with TerryLee (Talasky),” Logue said .

Nizzi also edged Swartzbaugh in what was another very exciting hurdles race in the 300s.

Speaking of Talasky, just like Messinger, she was outstanding, sweeping the 100, 200 and 400 and teaming with Nizzi, Smelko and Hope Hefright to win the 4×400 as well.

The Lady Knights’ Kirsten Baran continues to flirt with the school record in the shot put, tossing 33-9 1/2 to win that event as well as the discus. Madi Hultman added a first in the javelin and was second to Baran in the shot put.

“I was very pleased, this was a team effort,” Logue said. “We had some young throwers step up. All over we have people stepping up in events they hadn’t done the past few meets.”

Johnson also noted the strong performances from the likes of Amber McAfoose, who stepped into the 3200 and finished third, as well as Swartzbaugh in the long jump.

Action at the Warren County meet is scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m. from War Memorial Field on Thursday.

“We’re looking forward to have our girls perform well,” Logue said. “We take it one meet at a time.”
