Big day as Eisenhower girls win Warren County Track Meet

Warren’s Naomi Hahn reaches for the stick at the end of her record-setting performance in the 1600 meter run during Thursday’s Warren County Track Meet.

Thursday’s Warren County Track Meet had a little bit of everything. Two broken records and a new team champion were the highlight of what was a terrific day of action.

Eisenhower junior TerryLee Talasky broke the meet record in the 400 and Warren freshman Naomi Hahn did the same in the 1600, as the Lady Knights also took home the team crown – 102.5-88 over the Lady Dragons.

The win for Ike was the second in the history of the event which dates back to 1988, coincidentally the only other time they have finished first.

“The girls were really excited,” said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue. “This is something we strived for. It feels good because of where we came from when I started, just trying to make sure we had three girls in every event.”

Talasky’s time in the 400 of 59.2 broke the old mark of 1:00.58, set by Warren’s Abby Smith in 2003. She now owns the 100, 200 and 400 meet records, just barley missing on besting her own marks in her 100 and 200 wins, part of a performance that saw her earn Track MVP honors.

Youngsville’s Brooke Messinger leads the pack in the 800 meter run during Thursday’s Warren County Track Meet at War Memorial Field. Messinger took first in the 800 and 3200 and second in the 1600.

Her teammate, senior Kirsten Baran, won Field MVP honors, taking first in the shot put (32-5) and discus (90-7).

“Those two girls have had a great year,” Logue said. “Kirsten, winning the shot and discus and just missing in the javelin, that’s great at any meet, let alone this one. TerryLee has had a very good career, adding to her 100 and 200 records. That’s impressive.”

Hahn, meanwhile, set her meet record by beating Youngsville’s Brooke Messinger in a highly anticipated race. Ironically, it was Messinger’s record from last season that she broke. Hahn’s time of 5:24.5 edging Messinger’s 2016 mark of 5:25.5. Messinger finished second in the race.

“It was a great meet, just as we expected and it’s one we look forward to all season,” said Warren coach Elizabeth Beardsley. “We have several girls suffering from injuries but it was really nice to be competitive with the other county schools. There were PRs all across the board and all in all we are very happy with everyone’s performances. Now we refocus and look ahead for Districts next week.”

Messinger, in her final WCTM, went on to earn victories in the 800 and 3200, events in which Hahn finished fourth and second after having a mishap at the start of the 800. Nevertheless, she fought through it.

While Talaksy, Baran, Messinger and Hahn were obvious meet standouts, there were other athletes who also came up with some huge performances.

Youngsville’s Naomi Swartzbaugh edged Ike’s Tiffany Work in the 100 hurdles for the second time this week in what was another very close race – 16.4 to 16.6, with both likely to be a major factor at districts.

Swartzbaugh then teamed with Jocelyn Taydus, Maddi Marino and Linsey Jukes to win the 4×100 relay.

Not to be outdone was Eisenhower’s Delaney Nizzi. All she did was run a blistering 47.7 in the 300 hurdles – a top three mark in school history, followed by a win in the long jump (16 4/12) that qualified her for districts in that event and then a third place finish in the 200 and a leg in the 4×400 relay, which finished second.

Those first three events happened in the course of about 30 minutes, something that wasn’t lost on her coach.

Youngsville's Naomi Swarzbaugh edges Eisenhower's Tiffany Work by the slimmest of margins in the 100 hurdles.

“Delaney is one girl who is very supportive of the team and the team concept,” Logue said. “She still performs individually at a high level. Her meet was really in a short period of time. That’s just a testament to her being able to perform at a high level.

Logue also noted the performances of his 4×100 relay team of Cameran Edwards, Patricia Bortz, Emily Wheeler and Tiffany Work that qualified for districts, as well as the 4×800. “If they (4×8) had another week, they would have made it to districts as well,” he said.

He also noted Baran, Madi Hultman and Shaylah Hagg going 1-2-3 in the shot put as being key to the win, calling their results ‘impressive.’

For the Lady Dragons, Lydia Latimer once again won the high jump, while the 4×800 relay team of Bri Ristau, Michaela Lind, Kayla Giambrone and Hahn took first, as did the 4×400 team of Olivia Ashbaugh, Ristau, Lind and Latimer, closing out the meet strong.

Lind and Ristau finished 2-3 in the 800, while Giambrone added thirds in the 1600 and 3200.

Edwards and Wheeler also went 1-2 in the triple jump for Ike.

Eisenhower, Warren and Youngsville will now turn their attention to the District 10 championships Saturday, May 20 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, OH.
