Warren grads Wilson, Bupp finding success on college diamond

Paige Wilson continued her impressive freshman season for the Cal U Lady Vulcans with 13 hits at the PFX Spring Games held this week in Clermont, Florida.

After a few strong games early in the week, Wilson added a 2-for-3 day against Philadelphia U and went 2-for-4 against Nova Southeastern. Cal U won both of those games and currently sits at 7-7 overall.

Wilson is hitting a team leading .409 (18-for-44) with seven runs batted in and five runs scored while starting all 14 games for the Lady Vulcans. She also ranks second among Cal U hitters with a .471 on-base percentage and third with a .477 slugging percentage.

Cal is scheduled to play a pair of double-headers next week, hosting West Liberty on Thursday and traveling to Bowie State (Maryland) on Saturday. The Lady Vulcans begin Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play Saturday, March 31 against Slippery Rock at home.

Behrend picked No. 1

Alexa Bupp’s Penn State Behrend softball team was picked to repeat as Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Champions according to a poll of the league coaches. Penn State Altoona and D’Youville were chosen second and third, respectively.

The Lady Lions also had a Preseason Player of the Year pick in Shannon McDonnell while AJ Nichols was named Co-Pitcher of the Year.

Behrend has already played 10 games in Florida, and Bupp is hitting .294 (10-for-34) with a .314 on-base percentage and a .471 slugging percentage. She has also pitched 4 2/3 innings with team bests in both earned run average (1.50) and strikeouts per seven innings (10.50).

The Lady Lions have a pair of non-conference trips to Thiel and Westminster before opening their AMCC schedule in early April.
