Lady Dragons embark on state meet

The Lady Dragons will have a chance to compete against the best this weekend at Bucknell University.

Four Warren swimmers — Lydia Latimer, Paige McCullough, Cara Anderson and Gabby Hahn — will be in action at the PIAA Class 3A Swimming Championships held Saturday and Sunday at the Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg. Latimer was a District 10 Champion in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, while McCullough won the 100 breaststroke for the second year in a row.

If sending two individual competitors to the state meet wasn’t enough, Latimer and McCullough teamed with Anderson and Hahn to win the District 10 Championship in the 200 medley relay. McCullough, the lone senior of the group, is making her second trip to Bucknell while the other three are first-time qualifiers.

Warren’s 200 medley relay team is seeded 23rd in the event with a time of 1:56.89. The top seeds are all out of District 7 with Mount Lebanon (1:43.90), North Allegheny (1:44.61) and Upper St. Clair (1:44.80) laying claim to the first three spots. District 1 powers Avon Grove (1:44.99) and North Penn (1:45.16) round out the top five with several other eastern schools also in the running.

Individually, Latimer is seeded 29th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.73 and 30th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.12. Gateway freshman Olivia Livingston is the top seed in the 50 free with her time of 22.83, and the next ten fastest seeds are all seeded under the 24 second mark. Livingston is also seeded first in the 100 freestyle at almost a full second faster than the No. 2 seed.

Three more freshmen are at the top of the 100 backstroke field with Muhlenberg’s Cameron Gring (55.11), Conestoga’s Caroline Famous (55.43) and North Allegheny’s Torie Buerger (55.57) leading the way.

McCullough is seeded 31st in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.42. Avon Grove junior Olivia Paoletti (1:02.27) holds the top spot with District 1 rivals Kailyn Evans (1:02.92) of North Penn and Downingtown East’s Heather MacCausland (1:03.18) close behind.

Inclement weather has already forced changes to the format of this year’s meet. There will be no preliminary heats, only timed finals for all swimming events. Events involving the four Warren swimmers will be held during the Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning sessions.
