Lions advance to NPCC title game

WCCS' Tommy Jones scored 16 points in a 54-51 win over CCSI on Friday.

Warren County Christian School is going to be playing for a title.

Tommy Jones led a balanced effort with 16 points as the Lions advanced to the finals of the New Penn Christian Conference Tournament with a 54-51 win over CCSI on Friday.

“Outstanding team effort,” said WCCS coach Tom Jones. “Everyone who played ended up in the scorebook. Josiah Poindexter did a great job on the boards and Danny Jones did a nice job of taking care of the ball. They pressed us the whole game, but Danny was able to break the press down.”

Coach Jones alluded to some early nerves for his team that led to some turnovers, but that didn’t stop the Lions from taking a 24-19 lead into halftime.

They extended that lead to 38-28 at the end of third, with CCSI tightening it up late.

“The guys did a great job of keeping their composure,” coach Jones said.

Poindexter chipped in with 11 points for WCCS, while Josh Jones and Danny Jones added eight each.

Kyle Thomas poured in 28 points for CCSI and Andrew Gillette added 11.

With the win, the Lions advance to play Erie Bethel in the finals today at 2:30 p.m.

EB went unbeaten in conference play in the regular season, but the Lions played them to their closest game of the season in their second meeting.

“We expect to go out and give them a good game and hopefully come away with a championship,” coach Jones said.
