Youngsville, Eisenhower grapplers drop matches

Youngsville’s Austin Spear holds on for a pin in his 220-pound match against Union City’s Tyler Herrick Wednesday at YHS.

A strong showing in contested matches wasn’t enough for Youngsville to overcome six forfeits in Wednesday’s Region 3 wrestling dual against Union City, as the Eagles fell to the Bears by a final score of 54-17.

Nathan Lehman got the Eagles started on the right foot with a 19-4 technical fall win over Union City’s Austin Dolan at 126 pounds. Lehman wasted no time going after Dolan with four takedowns in the first period and two more in the second before ending the match with a near fall late in the third.

Aaron Morris followed with another win for Youngsville at 132. Morris built a 6-0 lead after one period before scoring a takedown and eventually pinning Union City’s Shad Haskins at the 2:34 mark. Youngsville wouldn’t win again until the 220-pound match, where Austin Spear battled Tyler Herrick into the third period before winning with a pinfall at 4:37.

Wyatt Scott came up just short in a back-and-forth match at 138, dropping a 6-4 decision to Union City’s Austin Jaquith. At 152 pounds, Aaron Melquist held a 2-0 lead over Ryan Newton before getting caught underneath for a pin.

Union City also grabbed wins at 145 and 106. Six forfeits went the Bears’ way and one match was a no contest.

HARBOR CREEK 56

EISENHOWER 15

Eisenhower ran into one of the area’s toughest lineups on Wednesday, falling to the Harbor Creek Huskies by a final score of 56-15 in Region 3 action.

Despite the loss, the Knights had several bright spots including wins by Garrett and Spencer head at 145 and 152, respectively. Garrett Head claimed a 6-3 decision over Alex Stafford while Spencer defeated Jason Bratt, 3-0.

“Garrett and Spencer both beat kids ranked above them in the district,” said Ike coach Kris Black. “Those are big wins for us, not only for rankings — which don’t really mean much — but for their confidence.”

Eisenhower also had a pair of wins from Logan Jacquay and Josh Bortz. Jacquay won a 17-2 tech fall over Harbor Creek’s Andrew Talton at 113 while Bortz wrestled to a 16-6 major decision over Wisdom Downs.

“It looks like Harbor Creek is going to win the region barring anything major,” Black said. “They’re the best team we’ll see this year in duals and I thought our guys wrestled them well. They went out aggressive and got after it. We’re getting better every week and we’re about to get over that hump.”

The Knights return to action this Friday and Saturday at the Falconer (N.Y.) Tournament.
