Winter sports season officially tips off today

Eisenhower senior Kirsten Baran will be a leader for the Lady Knights this season.

Youngsville's Caitlyn Craig is the Lady Eagles' top returning scorer.

It wouldn’t be the winter sports season in Pennsylvania without inclement weather.

As of Thursday night, plans had already changed for one of this weekend’s many high school basketball tip-off tournaments as Orchard Park will no longer be coming to Warren on Friday. Instead, the Lady Dragons will open their own tournament against Oil City, which will then be replaced — win or lose — by Orchard Park on Saturday. The other end of the bracket features Panama taking on Monitau in the early game.

Sheffield High School is scheduled host a total of eight games this weekend with the girls Tip-Off Classic coinciding with the boys Tip-Off Tournament. The Classic pits Port Allegany against Youngsville and Sheffield against Eisenhower on Friday with the host Lady Wolverines meeting Youngsville and Eisenhower playing Port Allegany on Saturday.

It’s a different look on the boys side this year as Youngsville and Eisenhower both elected to play in other tournaments. Port Allegany, North Clarion and Jamestown (Pa.) will join Sheffield in the new tournament format with a champion to be crowned Saturday night. The Wolverines begin the action against Port Allegany Friday at 4 p.m.

The Warren boys begin their season against Cambridge Springs in the first round of the Franklin Tip-Off Tournament. Franklin meets VisionQuest in Friday’s late game with the consolation and championship games slated for Saturday night.

Eisenhower is headed to Fairview, where the Knights will be tested early by the host Tigers on Friday night. Central Tech and Hickory meet on the other side of the bracket to round out one of the toughest tip-off fields in District 10.

The Youngsville boys drew Sharpsville on the first night of the Sharpsville Tip-Off Classic. The Eagles then play Fort LeBoeuf in the first of two games on Saturday with the host Blue Devils following against Commodore Perry.

Finally, the Forest Tournament features both the boys and girls teams from Warren County Christian School and Tidioute Charter joining Union City and Forest Area in two four-team fields. The Tidioute boys will be the first in action Friday against Forest while the Lady Bulldogs and WCCS meet in the first game of the girls tournament. The WCCS boys open against Union City on Friday afternoon.
