Despite loss, number of Dragons turn in strong efforts against Prep

Warren’s Owen Balas takes control against Cathedral Prep’s Veniamin Pikucia in their 152-pound match Wednesday. Balas made quick work of his opponent with a first period pin.

Warren went up against one of the top wrestling programs not just in District 10 but in the state on Thursday in Cathedral Prep.

The Ramblers bested the Dragons 49-18, but Warren turned in a number of strong performances.

“I think we can be right there,” said Warren coach Dean Johnson.

The Dragons (2-1) got four wins – two of which came via pin.

Alex Anderson earned a fall against Troy Lata at 113 in the third period, as did Owen Balas against Veniamin Pikucia in the first period at 152.

Warren’s Nick DeSimone goes full extension to try and gain an advantage during his 182-pound bout against Prep’s Lugi Yates on Thursday. DeSimone earned a 5-2 decision.

While Andreson and Balas were dominant, Jake Engstrom and Nick DeSimone also came away with impressive wins.

Engstrom earned a 4-0 decision over Spencer Staab at 145 and DeSimone was a 5-2 winner, getting a key third period escape to help beat Lugi Yates.

“That guy Nick DeSimone wreslted was either a district champion or district runner-up last year,” noted Johnson. “That was a really good win.”

The flu bug has hit the Dragons hard, with Brett Cummings one of those that have been effected. Johnson noted that he may have been ‘a little fatigued’ at the end of his bout against Evan Selker, an 8-1 setback.

Prep earned six pins, courtesy of Kawaun Deboe, Brumett, Andrew Stark, Michael Hughes, Marques McClorin and Carter Starocci, the latter of whom was a state medalist last season.

Alex Weston also battled District 10’s top-ranked wrestler at 132, Tyler McKinney, falling by a decision of 10-3.

“I’m pleased with where we’re at,” Johnson said. “That was their (Prep) first match of the season, but obviously they are very talented.”

The Dragons return to action on Thursday at Harbor Creek.
