Bortz, Hayes lead bevy of Eisenhower all-stars; Warren’s Salapek, Morrison, Youngsville’s Hendrickson also honored

Eisenhower’s John Bortz (52) and Jaydon Hayes (4) were named Region 3 all-stars on both sides of the ball. Bortz earned honors at offensive line and linebacker, while Hayes was recognized for his work at wide receiver and defensive back.

Warren's Hayden Salapek (70) turned in a stellar season on the defensive side of the ball, earning first team Region 5 honors along the defensive line for the Dragons.

Warren’s Hayden Salapek (70) turned in a stellar season on the defensive side of the ball, earning first team Region 5 honors along the defensive line for the Dragons.

Seven Warren County football players earned first team all-region honors, while seven more were named second team in voting released Thursday.

Eisenhower led the way, with junior Jaydon Hayes (1st team offense WR, 2nd team defense DB) and senior John Bortz (1st team OL, 2nd team LB) claiming honors on both sides of the ball in Region 3.

Other Knights voted to the first team were senior John Hummel (OL), junior Ross Venman (kicker) and senior Spencer Gray (punter).

All three Warren County punters earned all-region honors, in fact, as Youngsville senior Levi Hendrickson was first team in Region 1 and Warren sophomore Aidan Morrison was second team in Region 5. Warren’s Hayden Salapek was the other first-team honoree, notching 39 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks.

Hendrickson routinely boomed punts 35-plus yards during the season for the Eagles, while Morrison averaged 32.6 yards per punt, while also showing off his arm on some fakes, completing 3-of-4 passes for 67 yards.

Other Eisenhower players named second team in Region 3 were senior Bryon Braswell (RB), junior Justin Hagberg (DL), senior Adam Pascuzzi (DB) and junior Jonah Samuelson (DB).

For the Knights, Hayes was their top weapon in the passing game with 26 receptions for 426 yards and three touchdowns, an average of 18.5 yards per catch. Defensviely, he had 64 tackles and a team-leading six interceptions.

Bortz and Hummel, meanwhile, paved the way for an Eisenhower rushing attack that accounted for 2,285 yards on the season, averaging 6.6 yards per carry while scoring 26 touchdowns.

Braswell was the leading ground-gainer for the Knights, rushing for 943 yards, averaging 7.0 yards per carry and scoring nine touchdowns. The senior back also had five receptions for 51 yards.

Venman, who was also a standout on the Knights’ soccer team, was very reliable in the kicking game, converting 22-of-26 extra points. Gray, meanwhile, averaged 28.0 yards per punt.

Defensively, Bortz was fantastic. He led the Knights with 117 total tackles, including 11 tackles for loss and a sack.

Collectively, Eisenhower’s defense was a strength in helping them reach the District 10 2A playoffs, and nowhere was the more evident than the secondary, where Pascuzzi and Samuelson joined Hayes in earning all-star honors.

Pascuzzi recorded 40 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and an interception, while Samuelson had 32 total tackles and was second on the team in interceptions with four.

Farrell’s Braxton Chapman (Region 1), Iroqouis’ Tyler Barone (Region 3) and Meadville’s Journey Brown (Region 5) earned respective player of the year honors.

Farrell and Meadville are still alive in the PIAA playoffs, with Farrell playing District 9 champion Ridgway in 1A and Meadville playing Hollidaysburg in 5A, both on Friday. Unfortunately, Chapman was injured in the Steelers’ win over Conemaugh Township last week and will be out for the remainder of the playoffs.

Full Region 1, 3 and 5 all-stars follow.
