Warren golfers win third straight
Make it three in a row for Warren golf.
The Dragons won Thursday’s home match at Blueberry Hill Golf Club and clinched at least a share of the Region 3 title with their team score of 321. An outright region championship is well within reach, as Warren would have to finish last with Meadville taking first in the season’s final match.
Three golfers finished in the top five to help Warren take first – Nick Giambrone led the field with his low round of 76, Jake McCollough was third with a round of 80, and Joey Sidon was one shot back in fourth with an 81.
“I was real proud of the team today,” said Warren coach Dan Passmore. “They shot better today than they’ve shot in practice rounds. For Nick that’s the first time he’s been the medalist, and that’s not easy to do out of 30 people. Joey Sidon shot his best competitive round of the year, and Jake and Jack (Reynolds) have been really steady where they are.”
Following up Warren’s three golfers in the top five were Alex Fincher with an 85, Reynolds with an 85 and Zack Fincher with a 90.
Grove City’s Troy Laughry trailed Giambrone by one shot, finishing with a 77 to help his team take second behind the Dragons with a score of 333. Meadville was third at 350, Conneaut took fourth at 364 and General McLane finished fifth with 366.
The Dragons have now taken first in every match except the first of the season, which Meadville won at their home course.
With Thursday’s win – and barring an unlikely last place finish on Monday – Warren now has a chance to compete at the District 10 Team Championships as the Region 3 representative. The only other Class 3A league in District 10 is Region 7 featuring Cathedral Prep, McDowell and Harbor Creek among others.
“It’ll be tough at districts,” Passmore said. “The other regions always have good teams come out. But I always say you have a chance under 320, and we’ve been hovering right around there.”
As the season winds down, the Dragons also have a handful of individuals that could be headed to districts. Giambrone and McCollough have consistently been in the top five while Reynolds has been among the region’s low scorers as well.
The final Region 3 match of the regular season will be hosted by General McLane Monday at Culbertson Hills Golf Course in Edinboro.
