Lady Dragons fall to defending state champ Mercyhurst Prep
LAKEWOOD, N.Y. – Warren’s girls tennis team is winless after two matches to start the season, but then again, most teams would be against the type of competition the Lady Dragons have seen.
After opening against Class AAA power Fairview on Monday, Warren dropped to 0-2 with a 5-0 loss to reigning Class AA state champion Mercyhurst Prep on Wednesday. Rain forced the match to be moved at the last minute from the Lady Dragons’ home court at Betts Park to the indoor courts at the Lakewood YMCA.
Warren’s No. 1 singles player, Maribeth Miller, took on Mercyhurst’s Caitlyn Schultz and fell 6-0, 6-0.
“Caitlyn Schultz is an excellent player with great mobility,” said Warren coach John Parroccini. “Maribeth put up a valiant effort in this hour and twenty minute match and pushed her every step of the way.”
Freshman Gracie Wood continued to show her talent in a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Nicole Freemen and Abbie Buerkle also continued to improve her game in a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Mercyhurst’s Audrey Bell.
“Every match and every day at practice Gracie and Abbie learn more and more about the game and work very hard to improve,” said assistant coach Jon Meyer.
In doubles action, the junior pair of Morgan Lemmon and Rachel Cecco took on the top doubles pair of Fran Kern and Sophie Nicola from Mercyhurst and lost 6-1, 6-1.
“Morgan and Rachel started off strong, but Fran and Sophie were just too much to handle today,” added Meyer.
Warren’s new doubles pair of Haley Justice and Maddie Kriedler fell to Meryhurst’s Alex Baldwin and Ruth Golden 6-0, 6-0.
“With some match play under our belts, tomorrow’s practice will work on many of the things Coach Meyer and I saw so we can be ready to take on McDowell Friday at Betts Park,” Parroccini said.
