Holiday events include basketball in Sheffield, wrestling in Warren
Warren County’s winter sports teams are in the process of finding out where they stand in the early going of the 2014-2015 season.
After a two-day break for Christmas Eve and Christmas, local basketball and wrestling teams will compete in various holiday tournaments to bridge the gap into the new year.
Starting on the mat, Warren Area High School will host the Warren Duals on Saturday, Dec. 27. Teams from Warren, Seneca, Bradford, Titusville, Franklin and Harbor Creek will square off in five dual matches each throughout the day. Action is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. with Seneca vs. Bradford on Mat 1 and Franklin vs. Harbor Creek on Mat 2. The rest of the day’s schedule is tentative, with subsequent matches set to begin one after another until the tournament’s end. The host Dragons are slated to open against Harbor Creek in the second match on Mat 2’s – roughly 9:45 a.m.
Wrestlers from Youngsville will also be in action Saturday at the Redbank Valley Christmas Tournament. The Eagles will join Redbank Valley, Cameron County, Marion Center, Sharon, West Shamokin, Clarion, Northwestern, Slippery Rock, Keystone, and Punxsutawney in the tournament beginning at 8:30 a.m. Sheffield was originally scheduled to be in the Redbank Valley tournament, but will now compete on Saturday at the Brockway Big Dog Wrestling Tournament.
The other tournament taking place within county lines is the Sheffield Sports Boosters (boys basketball) Christmas Tournament Dec. 26 and 27 at Sheffield High School. Youngsville opens play Friday at 6 p.m. against a Cameron County Red Raiders team featuring 6-9 senior forward and Division I Bucknell commit Nate Sestina. The late game slates the host Wolverines taking on Union High School at 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s schedule begins with the consolation game at 6 p.m. and the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
Just down the road in Kane, the Eisenhower Lady Knights will take part in the Kane Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament along with the Wolves, Clarion, and North Clarion. Junior varsity games will be held at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. with varsity action following at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Ike and Clarion meet in round one Friday at 6 p.m.
Corry High School will play host to two separate boys and girls basketball tournaments over the break. The girls tournament takes place Friday and Saturday, with the Youngsville Lady Eagles taking on Union City in their opener Friday at 6 p.m. Corry and Erie East meet in the second game Friday with the consolation and championship rounds scheduled for Saturday evening.
The Corry Boys Christmas Tournament takes place Monday, Dec. 29 and Tuesday, Dec. 30. Eisenhower will square off against the host Beavers Monday at 7:30 p.m. The winner meets either Titusville or Union City in Saturday’s championship while the losers square off in the consolation game. Ike’s junior varsity team takes on Union City Friday at 4:30 p.m.
The Warren boys basketball team will cross state lines to play in the St. Bonaventure Tournament Dec. 27 and 28 in Olean, N.Y. The Dragons are scheduled to meet Maine-Endwell (N.Y.) in the large-school bracket Saturday at 6 p.m. Saturday’s other matchup features Bradford and Olean (N.Y.) at 7:45 p.m.
