Athlete of the Week

Eisenhower’s Casey Vincent is only a sophomore, but is already pitching like his current head coach and brother, Cody, who threw at Division I St. Bonaventure University. In two region wins last week vs. Iroquois and Youngsville, Casey struck out 30 over 14 innings, including 17 against Iroquois (11-1) and 13 in a no-hit win over Youngsville (6-0) to improve to 2-0 against Class A teams in the region. Vincent is the Times Observer Male Athlete of the Week, sponsored by McDonald’s.

Eisenhower High School junior Apprille Seamens was one of only a couple of girls at the school to give the pole vault a try last year when the program took on the event after several years off. “She was one of two who had no idea what to do, but had the nerve to give it a try,” said Ike girls track coach Mike Logue. Now she’s winning the event at meets, including against Johnsonburg and Cameron County in a tri-meet in which she set the Eisenhower school record. Her district-qualifying vault of 8 feet, 6 inches last Thursday beat the former school record of 7-8, set by Ashley Sopkin in 2003. Seamens is the Times Observer Female Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Little Caesars.

Warren Area High School senior shortstop Kaitlin Ishman had a heck of a week at the plate -in one day. In a doubleheader on Saturday against Mercyhurst Prep, Ishman was 7-for-8 with two home runs, two triples, six runs and four RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Region 7 opponent Mercyhurst Prep at the Farm Colony Complex. Ishman led off the 10-0 Game 1 win with a home run, and led off the 18-0 Game 2 win with a triple. In fact, all the Athlete of the Week candidates could have come from the Lady Dragons, with Meghan Loutzenhiser going 5-for-7 with three doubles, two triples and seven RBI on the day, and Paige Wilson 6-for-7 with a home run and four RBI. Alexa Bupp threw the first shutout with 10 K’s, and combined with Loutzenhiser for nine K’s in the second shutout. But Ishman jump-started the Warren girls softball team – off to a 4-1 Region 7 start. She’s the Times Observer Female Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Little Caesars.

Warren Area High School senior Tanner Rosenberg wasn’t feeling well on Wednesday, but he was well enough to win the 400, 800 and be part of the winning 3,200-meter relay in a track meet at Franklin. That culminated a week in which he also win the 400 and 800, and was part of the winning 1,600 and 3,200 relays, in an upset of the Prep boys track team. Rosenberg, being pushed by senior teammate Luke Wortman, also won the 400 at the 24-team Harbor Creek Invitational on Saturday, and joined Wortman, Ryan Shattuck and Kyle Kulka to set a meet record in the 1,600 relay to help Warren to a second-place team finish. A sight to see would have been the 1-2 finish by Rosenberg in 51.65 seconds and Wortman 51.68 in the 400. Rosenberg edged Wortman in the race, and is the Times Observer Male Athlete of the Week, sponsored by McDonald’s.
