College news

Sabrina Anderson, Slippery Rock University, has been named to Capital One Academic All-America honors according to an announcement from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Anderson was named to second team honors in her first season of eligibility for the award. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing, must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and must have significant athletic credentials. Anderson currently owns a 4.0 GPA academically and earned All-Region honors in the high jump and penathalon during the indoor season and in high jump and heptathalon during the outdoor season. She won the PSAC title in the pentathalon indoors and broke the SRU school record with a score of 3,584 points. She also cleared an NCAA provisional height of 1.72 meters in the high jump. Anderson graduated from Warren Area High School.

Recording a score of 35 for the week were the teams of Chris Richie and Dustin Anderson and Chris Tidquist and Matt Burrnett.

Brokenstraw clinched the 1st half of the WCTL by downing Kalbfus 345-342. In the other action, Pine Grove topped Corry 344-333, Sugar Grove I beat Sheffield 344-298, & Tidioute outshot Sugar Grove II 335-332. Promoted

Members of Fighting Tigers Martial Arts were recently tested and promoted by Master Instructor Kimio Nelson. Aileana Hughes, Lhanden Davis, Mara Dussia, Zach Peters, Cameron Kibbey, and Kassedy Kibbey of Tigers After School Karate (TASK) were tested and promoted to Orange belt in Kaneda Goshin Jutsu after they underwent an examination on their knowledge of Karate basics and self-defense techniques. Members of the FTMA Shotokan Martial Arts Club (SMAC) were also tested and promoted. Mark Dussia, Tammy Dussia and Tara Holmberg were tested and promoted to Yellow Belt in Shotokan Karate after demonstrating their knowledge of basics, self-defense and forms.

Despite challenging weather, over 100 golfers participated in the 15th Annual Experience, Inc. Golf Scramble at Blueberry Hill Golf Club on June 8.

The event, which helps generate needed funding for the community Meals-on-Wheels program and other in-house senior oriented service programs, paid $240 to each winning team and $160 to each second place team. The largest donors were Helpmates, Inc. and the American Legion Post 135.

The team of Scott Saber, Jim Murphy, Rob Jennings and Tyler Labesky fired a low gross of 60. Second, also with a score of 60, went to the team of Roy Swanson, Tony Pellegrino, Fuzzy Merenick and Jim Monaghan.

Low net on the men’s side was taken by Jason Hoffman, Bud Nolan, Chris Bonavita and Dave Sowers who collectively fired a 69. The team of Mike Stefaniszyn, Shawn Gustafson, Rick Repasky and Mike Fye came in second with a 71.

In the mixed division, a 67 fired by Larry Himes, Sue Himes, Max Brady and Ed Streich was good enough for first while the team of Mart Johnson, Dallas Reynolds, Cathy Storer and Larry Foster took second with a 71.

Danell Sowers, Jill Dart, Susan Wilson and Cindy Paulmier combined to fire a 70 and win the ladie’s division by one stroke over the team of Dawn Foringer, Chi Bon, Mandy Propert and Val Prave.

In the senior division, Harry Gusfatson, Mike Meitus, Pudge Johnson and George Ruppersburg fired a 62 while the team of Terry Pearson, Terry English, Rob Barney and Steve Gelotte took second with a 69.

Pat Hultquist took low gross with a 36 while Dave Peck fired low net at 28 durign Blueberry Senior League play on Monday at Buueberry Hill Golf Club. Team standings:

Little League results

CTI Physical Therapy played ADM Welding in boy’s training action last week. For CTI, Kyle Dippold and Joseph Gigliotti doubled while Nathan Ciprich homered for ADM Welding. Also for ADM, Seth Jensen tripled and Jaydee Wilcox and Ryan Posker doubled.

Jr. Legion

Post 135 swept Saegertown Saturday in a double-header at home, taking the first game 7-3 and game two 10-9.

Drake Gens went 2-for-3 in game one and shortstop Colby Johnson set up a double play, throwing to Derek Knapp on second, who got the ball to Gens on first.
