Little League

Warren County Youth Baseball/Softball Association Little League umpires are asked to meet at 2 p.m. Sunday at Betts-Jackson Field for scheduling of 2015 baseball and softball games.

Warren County Youth Baseball/Softball Association Little League coaches are asked to pick up team uniforms and baseballs between 2 and 6 p.m. Saturday at Betts-Jackson Field. This is the only time for uniform pick-up, so coaches are asked to at least have a representative attend.

Schedules have been released at www.wcybsa.org.

Legion tryouts

American Legion Warren Post 135 baseball will hold tryouts, for ages 13-15 by April 30, 2015, at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at Old Legion Field in North Warren. The tryout is for players from the Warren and Russell areas whose closest Legion baseball field is Old Legion Field.

For information, call Don Johnson at 688-9824.

Special Olympics

Warren County Special Olympics starts Track & Field from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 20, at War Memorial Field, and runs most Mondays and Wednesdays into late May.

This is rather labor intensive with four different activities happening at the same time. Shot put, javelin, long jump and running happen at the same time. Volunteers are needed to mark scores, run timers, retrieve javelins and shot puts, read measuring tapes, start races, as well as for general coaching and crowd control.

Outdoor writer award

Local outdoor writer Steve Sorensen, of Russell, has received the 2015 “Pinnacle” Award from the Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA), a national organization promoting the traditional outdoor sports. With sponsoring partner Mossy Oak, POMA offers the Pinnacle as is its highest honor for exceptional journalistic achievement and creative work in the outdoor press. POMA gives only one Pinnacle Award annually in each of six categories of work: Newspaper/Internet Article; Magazine Article; Book; Broadcast Media; Art and Photography; and Wildlife Conservation.

Sorensen took the top award in the Magazine Article category for an article titled, “The Arthur Young Buck – 1830,” the historic tale of a McKean County, PA buck, the earliest animal recognized in any big game record book in the world. It was published in the December 2013 issue of Pennsylvania Game News magazine.
