Postponed

The Mercyhurst Prep at Warren girls softball game scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed.

Big 30

Warren’s Kyle Kulka, Youngsville’s Sam Bubbenmoyer and Sheffield’s Slater Traister are the latest Warren County players to be added to this year’s Don Raabe Big 30 Charities Classic football game. Kulka played running back for the Dragons while Bubbenmoyer handled receiver and defensive back duties for Youngsville and Traister played offensive and defensive line. The 2015 Pennsylvania team will be coached by Eisenhower’s Jim Penley and the Knights’ staff.

College news

Warren Area High School graduates Sabrina Anderson and Nathan Zigler were honored by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as Atlantic Region All-Stars at the conclusion of Slippery Rock University’s indoor track and field season.

Anderson was named to the All-Region team in both the pentathalon and high jump. She won the PSAC title in the pentathalon and broke the Slippery Rock school record with 3,584 points and posted the second best high jump in the conference at 1.72 meters.

Zigler had the second best overall heptathalon score in the region at 4,581 points to earn All-Region status for the first time in his career.

Slippery Rock will hit the track as part of its outdoor season this Saturday at the California (Pa.) Invitational.

Warren Area High School graduate Hank Morrison helped the Mercyhurst University baseball team sweep a doubleheader against Slippery Rock on Sunday, 2-1 and 4-1.

Morrison went 2-for-3 with one run scored in both games as the Lakers improve to 8-0 on the season.

College news

Youngsville High School graduate Cory Craig was the winning pitcher for California University of Pa. in a 10-3 victory over Bloomsburg on Wednesday. Craig allowed one run and six hits over six innings of work, improving his overall record to 1-1 on the season.

Warren Area High School graduate Hank Morrison was 2-for-4 with a home run in Mercyhurst University’s 7-3 win over Pfeiffer on Tuesday. The Lakers are 6-0 and will take on Slippery Rock in a pair of doubleheaders this weekend.

Youngsville High School graduate Jake Marino singled in his first collegiate at-bat during Thiel’s 14-1 win over Pitt-Bradford on Thursday.

Coaching

On Friday, two assistant coaches with local ties will help guide their teams in the PIAA basketball ‘Elite 8′ round. Warren-native John Bowen’s Cathedral Prep Ramblers will take on Mars in the Class AAA boys quarterfinals at Sharon High School. In the Class A bracket, Youngsville High School graduate Scott Fox will be on the Clarion-Limestone Lions’ sideline as they meet Farrell at Clarion University’s Tippin Gymnasium. Tip-off for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Last week, Erie Cathedral Prep beat Hampton in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA boys basketball playoffs. Hampton is coached by Joe Lafko, who was head boys basketball coach at Warren Area High School from 1990 to 1996. He coaches his son, Joey, who went over 1,000 career points at Hampton with 19 in the loss.

In high school football, former WAHS head coach Brad Wright has been named new football coach at Punxsutawney Area High School.

Trap meeting

The Warren County Summer Trap League will hold its preseason meeting on Thursday, March 26 at 6 p.m. at the Sugar Grove AMVETS. All teams must have two voting representatives present, but the meeting is open to all shooters.

The preseason meeting for the Chautauqua County Summer Trap League will be Monday, March 16 at 6 p.m. at the Busti Trap Club.

Garrett Allen broke the Riverside Raceways track record in the Nostalgia SPEC Brushed class by running 93 laps in 5:01.00 minutes. Allen held the previous record of 92 laps set five weeks earlier. Here are the Riverside Raceway radio control race results from Wednesday, March 11:

Rescheduled

Sheffield’s junior high volleyball game against Johnsonburg, originally scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, has been rescheduled for Monday, March 9 beginning at 4 p.m. at Sheffield High School.

The boys basketball awards program has also been moved to March 9 beginning at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

High schools

Youngsville High School graduate Scott Fox is an assistant coach for the Clarion-Limestone High School boys basketball team, which recently won its first District 9 title in over 50 years with a 72-53 victory over Cameron County at Clarion University. The Lions’ last district championship came in 1961 when they defeated Sheffield in overtime. Clarion-Limestone will move on to the PIAA Class A Tournament beginning Friday against WPIAL fifth-seed Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic.
