Racquetball
The Lakewood Family YMCA will be hosting the 22nd annual Deep Freeze Racquetball Tournament on Feb 27 and 28. There are singles and doubles divisions for all skill levels with trophies going to the first and second place finishers. Each participant receives a long sleeve t-shirt and food is provided throughout the day. Call Tom Anderson at (716) 763-0303 to enter the event or for more information.
Hoops for Hospice
Hoops for Hospice is a youth basketball free throw competition to benefit Hospice of Warren County as well as the John and Orpha Blair Hospice Residence. The competition will take place on Sunday, March 1, in the gymnasium of Holy Redeemer Church, which is located across the street from the old South Street Elementary School on the east end of town. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. and the competition will begin promptly at 1:30 p.m. The cost of the competition will be $5 and all of the proceeds will go toward the upkeep of the John and Orpha Blair Hospice Residence and to provide a luncheon for the staff and volunteers who work for Hospice of Warren County.
Any boy or girl between the ages of 7-12 are eligible to participate in this competition. The children will be divided into four categories based on gender and age. The participant who makes the most of their 25 free throw shots in their category will win a trophy. If there is a tie, the participant with the most consecutive shots and the most total shots made, will win. Money will be collected during registration. No RSVP is needed.
Indoor soccer
The Warren II varsity girls defeated the Warren I girls, 5-1, recently at the Lakewood Family YMCA. Scoring goals for Warren II were Katlyn Adams (2), Claire Abplanalp, Lexie Grubbs, and Cheylee Smith. Olivia Ashbaugh had an assist and Justine Lasecki and Ashbaugh were goalkeepers.
D10 diving
Harbor Creek senior Hunter Scott becamse a three-time District 10 diving champion this past weekend at the D10 Class AA Diving Championships at McDowel Intermediate High School. He broke the D10 record in points to do it. Scott, General McLane’s Mike Allison, and Harbor Creek’s Stefan Kaliszuk finished 1-2-3 to advanced to states.
McDowell sophomore Jonathan Bauer won the Class AAA boys meet, as the lone PIAA qualifier, with Warren’s Drew Huey fifth.
A McDowell diver also claimed the Class AAA girls meet, in Kessa Zacks, a freshman. She also broke the D10 record, and the District 10 Class AA girls record was broken by Fort LeBoeuf senior Maggie Stebick, who competes for Union City through a co-op. Stebick, and Harbor Creek’s Ashley Van Horn and Olivia Brown qualified for Class AA states.
