Our opinion: Accept cash for school events

It’s fine, in our opinion, if schools want to accept credit or debit cards for admission to school events or for concessions at school events. But the time isn’t right to stop accepting cash as payment either. We agree with the idea behind a bill Rep. Dan Moul, R-Gettysburg, is drafting to require schools to accept cash for admission to school events. For most area marching bands, the end of football season means the end of marching band. Not so for the Youngsville Marching Eagles, whose season extended all the way through St. Patrick’s Day and a trip to Dublin, Ireland, to perform in the 2024 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. County residents are probably tired of reading headlines like the one on today’s editorial. The problem is those headlines aren’t going away, yet as a county we are incredibly resistant to change. It was about a year ago that the topic of further school consolidations swept new Warren County School District board members into office in an attempt to stave off the school district’s decision to send students from Sheffield to Warren for parts of every day. “IRS agents shouldn’t work from home” was the headline of an opinion article written by U.S. Rep. Ron Estes and published in the March 4 edition of the Wall Street Journal. Estes, a Republican representing Kansas’ 4th Congressional District, hit the proverbial nail on the head when he wrote, “Some might argue that teleworking, with reduced overhead, offers a tax-saving benefit, but that’s realized only if the agency is providing adequate customer service.
