Our opinion: Are microgrants best solution?

The Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry is asking the city and county governments to contribute toward the creation of a small business microgrant program. The idea is worth pursuing. Many small businesses have difficulty accessing bank funding when they’re raising the capital needed, which is why many areas have some sort of small business assistance programs available. We have no doubt that many of those who reach out to the WCCBI are looking for funding, and we have no doubt that requests will likely be more than the $80,000 WCCBI is hoping to secure for the first ...

Other voices: Illegal war becoming new norm

The killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, by a US-Israeli strike is a targeted assassination of a head of state. It also marks a grave escalation in a region already burdened with smouldering wars and fragile states. The consequences of the deliberate strike will reverberate across a Middle East marked by the aftershocks of foreign intervention. Revulsion against the hardline regime in Tehran, or the desire for a better future for the Iranian people, does not confer a legal justification. Force is lawful, under the UN charter, only in self-defence against an ...

Our opinion: Parking an unsolvable problem

Parking is a hassle in small cities like Warren all around the country. Part of the reason for that is that it’s impossible to meet everyone’s parking needs all the time. Take, for example, Fred Watson, the owner of Fred’s Pet Shop who spoke during a recent City Council meeting about parking issues on the 200 block of Warren near his store. The block includes unmetered parking spaces that are being used for extended periods of time, meaning the spaces aren’t available for those who are trying to come to businesses on the 200 block. The store owner is requesting signs for ...

Our opinion: Make internet safer for all

The internet can be wonderful. We are thankful for the additional tools it has given us to keep our region informed on their communities — from our website and social media platforms to video news segments and features. But the internet can be a terrifying place as well. State Attorney General Dave Sunday reminded our sister paper, the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, of that sad reality in a brief conversation before his keynote remarks to the Lycoming County Republican Party’s Lincoln Day Dinner. He noted the work the state attorney general’s office does on identifying, ...

Our opinion: Expanding broadband network

We can’t say we disagree with Gregory Burkett when it comes to the use of federal money given to broadband projects in Warren County. In 2024, Verizon was awarded a $4.7 million Broadband Infrastructure Program grant toward a $9.9 million project that will bring high-speed broadband services over Verizon’s fiber-optic network to an estimated 1,220 homes in Warren County. The awarded project would include municipalities such as Warren, Russell, Clarendon, Ludlow, Spring Creek, Irvine, Pittsfield, and Youngsville. The Pleasant Township resident addressed the Warren County ...

Our opinion: RDA keeps its options open

We won’t know for a while yet what the future holds for property at 231-237 Pennsylvania Ave. West - and there’s nothing wrong with that. A local development group which includes Bee Courageous at Garden Grub, Sugar Bay and Create Community has come forward with an idea for the parcel. The group is working through all of the legal steps necessary to form a 501(c)3, create the documentation the Warren Redevelopment Authority needs to consider a formal proposal from the group and, at the same time, working to get a comprehensive engineering report completed. And, the group needs to ...
