Based on what has been a mild autumn, there's hope for a warmer winter. That is definitely the case when considering the cost of heating our residences.
According to PA Energy Ratings, the Commonwealth ranks 10th for the highest average winter heating cost. "Part of this is due to the fact that PA is situated where cold weather systems blow eastward from western Canada and the Plains States," the platform notes. "These can sometimes collide with warmer, wetter weather systems moving up the east coast and cause ice storms or dump 1-2 feet of snow onto the region. Similarly, cities in western PA are often hit by lake-effect snow storms."
The organization notes the state's heating costs are up 54% since 2024. Some of that increase is tied to the economy -- as well as higher electricity costs that are burdening the nation.
As for residents here, 79% indicated they are concerned about the possibility of rising heating bills this winter, according to our weekly poll. The other 21% are not.
